A method of forming a metallic structure on an optical element including a surface relief structure is disclosed. The method includes: forming a metallic structure on the optical element by applying a metal containing ink to the surface relief structure. The metal-containing ink includes an organic solvent and a metal-containing component. The metal-containing component is a homogeneously soluble metal salt, a metal complex or any combinations thereof.

Method of metallising optical elements comprising surface relief structures

A sensitive refractive index based detector comprises a first laser cavity ( ) and a second laser cavity ( &prime;) each for generating a respective laser light beam. Each laser cavity is defined in a planar waveguide. The surface of the waveguide of the first laser ( ) receives a sample to be detected. Light from the two lasers is mixed using a coupling grating ( ) and a beat frequency between the lasers dependent upon the refractive index of the substance is measured at a detector ( ). Extremely sensitive measurement of small quantities of substance are made possible.

Detection of a substance by refractive index change

A method and an apparatus are provided for the determination of a condition or state of an object based on quasi-elastic interaction between the object and light transmitted to the object. This light is transmitted from a light source through a diffractive optical element. The light that has interacted with the object is collected and detected. The diffractive optical element is designed in such a way that the determination of the condition or state of the object is substantially exclusively defined by the diffractive optical element and substantially independent of properties of the light source. Several diffraction patterns may be integrated in one diffractive optical element, thereby integrating several optical functions, such as lenses, beam splitters, etc. in one optical component. Use: Transit-time-velocity measurement, Doppler velocity measurement, viscoelastic measurement, differential speckle determination, differential vibrometer, distance determination apparatus, etc.
