A coated cutting tool includes a substrate and a coating, wherein the coating has a PVD layer being a compound of the formula TiSiCNO, wherein 0.10&#x3c;x&#x2264;0.30, 0&#x2264;a&#x2264;0.75, 0.25&#x2264;b&#x2264;1, 0&#x2264;c&#x2264;0.2, and a+b+c=1. The PVD layer is a NaCl structure solid solution. The disclosure further relates to a method for producing the PVD layer by cathodic arc evaporation using a pulsed bias voltage of from about &#x2212;40 to about &#x2212;450 V to the substrate and using a duty cycle of less than about 12% and a pulsed bias frequency of less than about 10 kHz.

Coated cutting tool and method

A method for producing a coating on a substrate, wherein the coating includes a PVD layer (A), deposited by cathodic arc evaporation, being a compound of the formula MeSiAlCNO, wherein Me is one or more metals of groups 4, 5 and 6 in the IUPAC periodic table of elements. The PVD layer (A) is deposited by applying a pulsed bias voltage of from about &#x2212;40 to about &#x2212;450 V to the substrate and using a duty cycle of less than about 12% and a pulsed bias frequency of less than about 10 kHz. A coated cutting tool having a substrate and a coating is also disclosed, wherein the coating includes the PVD layer (A) with the compound of the formula MeSiAlCNO. The PVD layer (A) is crystalline having a FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) value for the cubic (111) peak in X-ray diffraction of &#x2264;0.3 degrees (2theta).

Method of producing a PVD layer and a coated cutting tool

The present disclosure relates to a coated cutting tool including a substrate and a coating disposed on the substrate, wherein the coating includes a layer of TiZrAlN, where 0&#x3c;x&#x2266;0.3, 0.2&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.8 and 0.1&#x2266;(1-x-y)&#x2266;0.7. The disclosure further relates to a method of producing such a coated cutting tool, and to a cutting insert forming a coated cutting tool.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert comprising a body of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, high speed steel (HSS), polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), a hard and wear resistant coating is applied, grown by physical vapour deposition (PVD) such as cathodic arc evaporation or magnetron sputtering. Said coating comprises at least one layer of (ZrAl)N with of 0.45&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.85 and 0.90&#x2266;y&#x3c;1.30 with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. Said layer has a nanocrystalline microstructure consisting of a single cubic phase or a mixture of hexagonal and cubic phases. The insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved crater wear resistance.
