A tool intended for chip removing machining is disclosed. The tool is of the type that has a basic body and an indexable cutting insert that can be connected to the basic body via an interface including a primary connecting surface in the basic body and a secondary connecting surface in the cutting insert. Among two cooperating support flanks included in the connecting surface of the basic body, one is situated on a level above the other in order to form a lateral support for the cutting insert. In the connecting surface of the cutting insert, contact flanks are included that, together with the clearance surface of the cutting insert, form a V-shapedly converging wedge part that can be applied in a seat delimited by the support flanks, the contact flank being urged against the low-positioned support flank of the basic body, while an upper part of the clearance surface of the cutting insert is urged against the high-positioned support flank. By means of the high-positioned support flank, large cutting forces can be carried in a dominant line of action, the interface in other respects efficiently counteracting such tendencies to dislodging/turning of the cutting insert that are caused by more moderate forces in other lines of action. In addition to the proper tool, a cutting insert and a basic body for the tool, per se, are also disclosed.

An indexable milling insert includes opposite top and bottom sides between which a peripheral clearance surface extends, and two opposite cutting edges formed in the transition between the top side and the clearance surface. Each of the cutting edges includes a substantially straight portion connected with a straight section of the clearance surface, and further includes a curved portion connected with a convexly arched section of the clearance surface. A coupling including one or more male- and/or female-like engagement members is located along said clearance surface. Furthermore, the milling insert may be used with a shim plate for attachment to a milling tool.

A tool body includes an insert seat for receiving a cutting insert for chip-removing machining. The insert seat includes a bottom surface and support surfaces upstanding from the bottom surface. Each support surface comprises at least three ridges separated by grooves. Each groove has a depth greater than zero and no greater than 0.015 mm. An insert mounted in the seat by a screw has a center hole whose axis is offset from the axis of a threaded hole of the body in which the screw is connected. That offset distance creates a prestress of the insert toward the ridges. The depth of the grooves (i.e., the height of the ridges) is substantially less than the distance of the offset.

A rotatable cutting tool for chip-removing machining includes a basic body which defines a center axis of rotation. Cutting inserts are detachably mounted in respective cutting seats that are formed in the basic body. Each insert has a square shape and includes first and second pairs of mutually parallel major cutting edges, four corners, and four wiper edges. Each wiper edge is situated between a major cutting edge and a respective corner. The wiper edges are shorter than the major cutting edges and are inclined relative thereto, wherein an imaginary extension line of the wiper edge forms a first acute angle with the respective major cutting edge as the insert is viewed in a direction perpendicular to the top surface. The cutting seats are arranged to orient the inserts wherein an axially forwardmost wiper edge of each insert lies in a plane oriented perpendicular to the axis, and wherein a radially outermost wiper edge of each insert is oriented parallel to the axis.
