An extravascular system is provided which includes a catheter assembly and a needle assembly. The needle assembly includes a needle cap containing a needle shield. The needle shield may be a V-clip having a pawl. The pawl may communicate with an extension on the needle shield by forming a bend between the pawl and the extension. The bend may include at least one dent, and the dent may be formed within the center of the bend. Alternatively, the bend may include a plurality of dents. The plurality of dents may be placed at various locations over the pawl width. The pawl may be folded back onto itself. Indeed, the pawl may be folded back on itself to form essentially a pawl of double thickness. In addition, the pawl may be constructed with a bend of various angles. The angle of the bend between the pawl and the extension may be less than 90&#xb0;. The angle may be in the range of from about 90&#xb0; and about 70&#xb0;. The pawl may also include a corrugated design or structure.

Needle shielding pawl structures

An extravascular system for accessing the vasculature of a patient including a catheter having an interior surface, a needle disposed within the catheter, and/or a needle cap defining at least one capillary space and including a flexible seal surrounding the at least one capillary space. The flexible seal may engage the interior surface of the catheter. A method of controlling exposure to a liquid from an extravascular system including providing a wicking material positioned adjacent to a flow channel such that any fluid located external to the flow channel is retained by the wicking material. The wicking material may be incorporated into any extravascular system where exposure to liquids is undesirable.

Vascular access device blood sealing and exposure prevention

An extravascular system for accessing the vasculature of a patient may include a catheter adapter, a needle, and/or a needle tip shield assembly. The needle tip shield assembly may have a needle cap, and the needle cap may have a needle shield and at least one low friction surface. The needle may be disposed within the catheter assembly and the needle tip shield assembly. The low friction surface may reside between the needle shield and the needle. The at least one low friction surface may reside on the needle, on the V-clip, and/or on a structure located between the needle and the V-clip.

Reducing withdrawal force in a safety IV catheter

A tip shield of a catheter assembly has a resilient clip compartment, which may become blood-filled during use of the catheter assembly. The resilient clip inside the compartment is released upon withdrawal of the needle of the catheter assembly to disengage the catheter hub from the tip shield. The resilient clip also prevents re-exposure of the needle after being withdrawn into the tip shield. The blood-filled compartment may potentially leak or splash through an opening from the compartment when the resilient clip is released. A covering blocks the opening from the tip shield to minimize the risk of blood exposure. In addition, the covering minimizes the risk of premature release of the resilient clip and re-exposure of the needle.

Catheter assembly with tip shield closure

A passive optical component directs first electromagnetic radiation incident on the component in a first direction and second electromagnetic radiation incident on the component in a second direction to a mutual direction. The optical component comprises an interacting surface which is arranged to interact with said first and second electromagnetic radiation. The interacting surface comprises first portions, each having a surface extending in a third direction, which is essentially perpendicular to the mutual direction, and second portions, each having a surface extending in a fourth direction. The optical component reflects essentially all the first electromagnetic radiation and transmits at least a significant portion of the second electromagnetic radiation for directing the first and the second electromagnetic radiation to a mutual direction. An optical system and a method using the passive optical component are also shown.
