An apparatus is disclosed for the separation of one or more fractions out of whole blood, plasma, or other similar body fluids utilizing an adsorption column comprising means for feeding the fluid to the column and means for the removal of same. The apparatus includes an analyzing device for the coarse analysis of the fluid and a valve device which is adapted to conduct the fluid flow from the column as a function of the analysis carried out to one of two analyzing devices for the fine analysis of the fluid to determine if the fluid is to be conveyed to a collection container, conveyed back to the source or conveyed to a drain.

Apparatus for hemofiltration is disclosed, including a reverse osmosis module for purifying an impure supply of water, a container for adding concentrate thereto and preparing a replacement liquid, a semipermeable hemofiltration membrane filter for filtering the supply of blood and the replacement liquid in order to produce an ultrafiltrate stream and a filtered blood stream from the supply of blood and a filtrate stream from the replacement liquid so that the filtered blood and filtrate streams can be mixed and returned to the patient. An apparatus and method are also disclosed for monitoring fluid filtration in a semipermeable filtration membrane filter including a fluid inlet for supplying the fluid to the filter for contact with the semipermeable membrane to produce a filtrate therethrough, a fluid outlet for withdrawing the fluid from the filter subsequent to such contact, a filtrate outlet for withdrawal of the filtrate from the filter, a recirculation loop for returning the fluid withdrawn from the filter back to the fluid inlet, an indicator supply for adding an indicator which will not normally pass through the semipermeable membrane to the fluid in the recirculation loop, and a detector associated with the filtrate outlet for detecting the presence of the indicator in the filtrate stream.

Processes and apparatus for the removal of waste metabolites from metabolite-containing solutions are disclosed. The disclosed processes include alternatively adsorbing and desorbing the metabolites on a pair of adsorbent-containing columns, each column being maintained at a reduced temperature during adsorption and at an elevated temperature during desorption, with the columns being flushed subsequent to desorption and prior to their re-use for adsorption thereon. The disclosed apparatus includes a pair of adsorbent-containing columns, means for alternatively delivering the metabolite containing solution to each of the columns for alternate adsorption and desorption thereon, means for withdrawing the metabolite containing solution from each of the columns, means for alternately flushing the columns subsequent to desorption and prior to adsorption thereon, and means for alternately maintaining the columns at reduced temperatures during adsorption and at elevated temperatures during desorption so that the effectiveness of the adsorbent for adsorption is increased during adsorption at the reduced temperatures. A disposable tube set for use in connection with such a pair of adsorbent containing columns is also disclosed, including a flexible inlet tube including a pair of inlet branches for delivery of the metabolite containing solution to each of the columns, and a flexible outlet tube including a pair of outlet tube branches for connection with the outlet end of each of the columns.

Process and device for the removal of waste metabolites from a solution

A dialysis system is disclosed for treatment of a first fluid with dialysis fluid, the dialysis fluid being a mixture of water and dialysis concentrate. The system comprises a dialyzer, a source of water, a source of dialysis concentrate, first and second fluid conducting means communicating with the sources of water and dialysis concentrate, pump means associated with the first and second fluid conducting means, and third fluid conducting means for conducting fluid from the pump means to the dialyzer. The pump means serves to draw water and dialysis concentrate through the first and second fluid conducting means respectively, and to mix the water and dialysis concentrate so that a mixture of water and dialysis concentrate is conducted through the third fluid conducting means.

Fluid conducting apparatus is disclosed for a dialysis system having a dialyzer, a source of dialysis fluid for the dialyzer, a heating chamber for heating dialysis fluid before introduction into the dialyzer, and pump means for pumping heated dialysis fluid from the heating chamber to and through the dialyzer. The fluid conducting apparatus includes first and second fluid conducting means. The first fluid conducting means is adapted to be connected to the source of dialysis fluid and to the heating chamber for introducing dialysis fluid into the heating chamber, and the second fluid conducting means is adapted to be connected to the heating chamber, the dialyzer and the pump means for conducting the fluid from the heating chamber to and through the dialyzer. The apparatus also includes shut-off means adapted to terminate the flow of heated dialysis fluid from the heating chamber to the dialyzer when the rate of flow of fluid out of the chamber exceeds the rate of flow of fluid into the chamber. In this way, the heating chamber will not be emptied of dialysis fluid.

Apparatus for conducting fluids in a dialysis system

Control apparatus for controlling or adjusting the position of a control member is disclosed. The control apparatus includes first and second members, pivotally connected together to pivot about a point. A control member is mounted on the first member and is disposed at a first distance from the pivot point. Coarse control means operatively associated with the control member are provided for coarsely adjusting the position of the control member relative to the second member. Further, fine control means are provided for finely adjusting the position of the control member relative to the second member. The fine control means acts at an action point on one of the first and second members to pivot the first and second members relative to each other about the pivot point. The action point at which the fine control means acts is a second distance from the pivot point which is greater than the first distance such that a selected amount of movement of the action point results in a change in position of the control member relative to the second member, the amount of change in position being less than the selected amount of movement.

A method and apparatus for sterilization of a dialysis system. The dialysis system comprises a dialyzer, a receptacle for water and a receptacle for dialysis concentrate, and fluid conducting means for conducting fluids from the receptacles for water and dialysis concentrate to and through the dialyzer. The method includes the steps of terminating the conducting of dialysis concentrate through the fluid conducting means, introducing sterilizing agent into the fluid conducting means at a first point in the fluid conducting means, conducting the sterilizing agent through the fluid conducting means downstream of the first point, and directing a portion of the sterilizing agent from a second point in the fluid conducting means to a third point in the fluid conducting means, the second point being downstream of the first point and the third point being upstream of the first point. The apparatus includes a source of sterilizing agent, means for introducing sterilizing agent into the fluid conducting means at a first point in the fluid conducting means, and fluid return means for conducting a portion of the sterilizing agent from a second point in the fluid conducting means to a third point in the fluid conducting means, the second point being downstream of the first point and the third point being upstream of the first point. With such a method and apparatus, sterilizing agent is conducted substantially throughout the fluid conducting means of the dialysis system.
