A power cable assembly supplies power to and suspends in a well an electrical well pump. The assembly includes metal tubing having a longitudinal tubing center line and a cylindrical side wall. Power cable has an exterior delta shape when viewed in a cross-section. The delta shape defines three exterior side surfaces that face radially outward and join each other at corners. Power cable has three insulated power conductors wrapped helically with a metal strip. The power cable is located in the tubing with the corners deformed against an inner diameter of the tubing.

A reinforcing interface between the stator and its housing in a progressing cavity pump is created from ribs extending inwardly into the stator from the housing inner wall that can be longitudinally oriented or spirally oriented. Alternatively, the housing wall can have grooves into the inner wall that are made more bulbous further into the housing wall from the groove inlets so that when filled with stator material a long and continuous grip is obtained with either the wall groove embodiment or the internal rib embodiment.

A cable for transmitting electricity for use with an electric submersible pump has a plurality of conductors for conducting electricity along the length of the cable. A first layer of insulation surrounds each of the conductors. A jacket, or second layer of insulation, surrounds all of the conductors and the first layer of insulation. Both the first layer of insulation and the jacket insulation are comprised of an polymeric compound. At least one of the insulation layers has filler material dispersed therein, the filler material having a higher level of thermal conductivity than the insulation layer it is contained in.

A cable for transmitting high voltage electricity for use with an electric submersible pump has a plurality of solid conductors for conducting electricity along the length of the cable. The solid conductors are uniformly and firmly bonded to the surrounding insulation with a thin bonding layer applied directly over the conductor. A layer of conductive fabric tape surrounds the insulation to form an outer stress control layer. The insulated conductors are surrounded by an extruded layer of lead. A second layer of fabric tape surrounds the lead. An armored outer layer surrounds the insulated conductors and the lead. Space between the insulated and wrapped conductors and the armored outer layer is filled with a jacket material.

High voltage electric submersible pump cable

A system, method and apparatus for incorporating a fiber optic cable into a power cable for an electrical submersible pump is disclosed. The fiber optic components are protected from damage during handling of the cable with pump cable components, such as lead sheaths and jacketing materials. The optical fibers are protected from damage due to corrosive oil well chemicals and gasses, as well as protected from decompression damage.

System, method and apparatus for power transmission cable with optical fiber for downhole tool in subterranean applications

An electrical submersible pump assembly has a motor cooperatively engaged with a pump for driving the pump and a motor lead extending to the motor for supplying power to the motor. The motor lead has an electrical conductor enclosed within a tube. The tube is sealed from an exterior environment of the motor and contains a dielectric fluid. The motor may be filled with a dielectric lubricant and the interior of the tube of the motor lead may be in fluid communication with the dielectric lubricant. Alternatively, the motor may filled with a dielectric lubricant and the dielectric fluid within the interior of the tube of the motor lead may be sealed from the dielectric lubricant.

A power line for an electrical submersible pump has three metallic impermeable tubes. A single electrical conductor is located within each of the tubes. Each conductor has at least one elastomeric insulation layer surrounding it. An annular portion of the insulation layer of each of the electrical conductors is in tight contact with the tube to form a seal. The annular portions may be annular crimps formed in the tube at intervals. The annular portion could also be a continuous seal caused by swelling of the insulation layer due to contact with a hydrocarbon.

A method for manufacturing an electrical cable provides an electrical cable suitable for use in heating wells. An elastomeric jacket is extruded over insulated conductors. A stainless steel plate is rolled around the jacket to form a cylindrical coiled tubing having a seam. The seam is welded, then the tubing is swaged down to a lesser diameter to cause the tubing to frictionally grip the jacket. A recess maybe formed in the jacket adjacent the seam to avoid heat damage from the welding process.

Heater cable and method for manufacturing

An electric motor has a housing with a plurality of stator discs. The discs have slots that align with one another, forming passages. A dielectric film tube inserts into the slots, each of the tubes having a continuous circumference. Each tube has a nonmeltable dielectric film layer of high temperature insulation. The dielectric film layer has overlapping edges and is bonded to a carrier layer of a meltable material. The tubes may be inserted into the slot passages by drawing a vacuum in the interior of each tube, causing it to collapse so that it can be readily inserted.

A heater cable is deployed in a well bore to elevate the temperature of the wellbore above the temperature of the surrounding fluid and the formation. One or more fiber optic strings are included in or carried by the heater cable which is placed along a desired length of the wellbore. At least one fiber optic string measures temperature of the heater cable at a plurality of spaced apart locations. Another string is utilized to determine the temperature of the wellbore. The heater cable is heated above the temperature of the well bore. The fluid flowing from the formation to the wellbore lowers the temperature of the cable at the inflow locations. The fiber optic string provides measurements of the temperature along the heater cable. The fluid flow is determined from the temperature profile of the heater cable provided by the fiber optic sensors.

Method of using a heater with a fiber optic string in a wellbore

A method of heating gas being produced in a well reduces condensate occurring in the well. A cable assembly having at least one insulated conductor is deployed into the well while the well is still live. Electrical power is applied to the conductor to cause heat to be generated. Gas is allowed up past the cable assembly and out the wellhead. The heat retards condensation, which creates frictional losses in the gas flow.

Live well heater cable

An improved cable and cable sheathing arrangement that affords protection for the conductive elements against corrosion, chemical and physical hazards. In exemplary embodiments described herein, the cable includes a plurality of copper conductors that are individually encased in a thermoplastic insulation. An extruded lead sheath surrounds the thermoplastic insulation. Finally, a thermoplastic jacket encloses the lead sheaths of the conductors in surrounding contact to provide a unitary cable. A cost effective cable is provided, and the need for an external metal armor is reduced or eliminated. Additionally, the cable provides substantial and adequate resistance to corrosion and physical hazards.

The present invention provides a heater cable (10) that may be deployed in a wellbore to elevate the temperature of the wellbore above the temperature of the surrounding fluid and the formation. One or more fiber optic strings are included in or are carried by the heater cable. The heater cable carrying the fiber optics is placed along the desired length of the wellbore. At least one fiber optic string measures temperature of the heater cable at a plurality of spaced apart locations. Another string may be utilized to determine the temperature of the wellbore. In one aspect of this invention, the heater cable is heated above the temperature of the wellbore. The fluid flowing from the formation to the wellbore lowers the temperature of the cable at the inflow locations. The fiber optic string provides measurements of the temperature along the heater cable. The fluid flow is determined from the temperature profile of the heater cable provided by the fiber optic sensors.

A power cable for an ESP is used also for heating well bores in cold climates. An electrical switch is located within a wellbore at a selected location in the power cable. The electrical switch is provided to selectively short out the conductors within the power cable, thereby allowing the power cable above the switch to be used as a resistive heating element to thaw the wellbore. While the switch is open, power supplied to power cable drives ESP in a normal manner.
