In one embodiment, a method of formulating a sealant to span an opening and form a seal with surfaces across the opening is provided. The method further includes selecting a fluid material capable of contacting and adhering to the surface of the opening and which reacts to form a solid material as a result of a thermal reaction. The method further includes selecting and intermixing one or more solids with the fluid material to form a composite, wherein the solids migrate within a column of the composite sealant before the composite sealant cures from a fluid to a solid and bonds to the surfaces of the opening, and the change in volume of the lower portion of the composite sealant into which the solids have migrated, as the temperature thereof changes during curing, is insufficient to cause it to pull away from the surfaces of the opening or fail internally.

A method of sealing a well includes selecting a preexisting fluid pathway between a production platform and a desired sealing location in the well to be sealed, determining, for the well to be sealed, a desired quantity of sealant having known flow qualities, to be delivered in fluid form to the well in the sealing region of the well, determining, based on the flow qualities of the sealant in fluid form and the flow qualities of the preexisting fluid pathway, the time needed to deliver the desired quantity of the sealant in fluid form to the sealing location in the well, determining, based on the time needed to deliver the desired quantity of the sealant in fluid form to the sealing location in the well, whether the sealant will maintain the fluid form, if necessary, change one or more qualities of the sealant so that the desired quantity of the sealant will reach the sealing location in the well while in the fluid form, and transport the quantity of sealant, in fluid form, through the preexisting fluid pathway between a production platform and the desired sealing location in the well to be sealed.

Method of producing resin composite with required thermal and mechanical properties to form a durable well seal in applications

A method for abandonment of a subsea well includes: setting a packer of a lower cementing tool against a bore of an inner casing hung from a subsea wellhead; fastening a pressure control assembly (PCA) to the subsea wellhead; hanging an upper cementing tool from the PCA and stabbing the upper cementing tool into a polished bore receptacle of the lower cementing tool; perforating a wall of the inner casing below the packer; perforating the inner casing wall above the packer by operating a perforator of the upper cementing tool; mixing a resin and a hardener to form a sealant; and pumping a fluid train through bores of the cementing tools and into an inner annulus formed between the inner casing and an outer casing hung from the subsea wellhead. The fluid train includes the sealant followed by a cement slurry.

Disclosed is a composition and a method for cementing a casing in a borehole of a well using an aqueous cementing composition comprising (a) water, (b) a cementing composition comprising (i) a hydraulic cement, (ii) a hydrophobically modified polymer, (iii) a dispersant, and optionally (iv) one or more other additives conventionally added to aqueous cementing compositions useful in cementing casings in the borehole of wells. Preferably the hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose has an ethylene oxide molar substitution of from 0.5 to 3.5, a hydrophobe degree of substitution of from 0.001 to 0.025, and a weight-average molecular weight of from 500,000 to 4,000,000 Daltons and the dispersant is sulfonated polymer, melamine formaldehyde condensate, a naphthalene formaldehyde condensate, a branched or non-branched polycarboxylate polymer. Preferably, the aqueous cementing composition is pumped downwardly into said casing, pumped upwardly into the annulus surrounding said casing until said aqueous composition fills that portion of the annular space desired to be sealed, and then maintaining said aqueous cementing composition in place until the cement sets.

Systems, methods and compositions for temporary sealing fractures in subterranean formations employ at least one constituent for temporary sealing a fracture in a subterranean well. The degradation kinetics of the composition is dependent upon at least one degradation temperature-time parameter for designating a temperature range and a time at which the composition degrades.

Temporary fluid diversion agents for use in geothermal well applications

A method can include introducing a particulate diverting agent into a first fracture within an underground reservoir formation. The particulate diverting agent can at least partially hydraulically isolate the first fracture. The particulate diverting agent can also be a temporary material which substantially degrades over an extended time. The underground reservoir formation can be stimulated with a stimulation fluid sufficient to expand a second fracture within the underground reservoir formation. The particulate diverting agent can then be allowed to substantially degrade.

Gravel packs suffer plugging and damage over time from produced particles and other plugging materials brought into the pack as production continues. This invention relates to a chemical treatment for the gravel pack designed to remove damaging particulate matter from the pack via dissolution or displacement. Damaging material is forced sufficiently far into the producing reservoir to prevent its remigration back into the pack.

A two part encapsulated cementing system is mixed downhole in a method of remediation of an active well. Using this two part system, one of the components is first placed in the well at the desired remediation depth. Next, the other component is placed in the well above the first placed component. Densities of the components have been selected such that the density of the second placed component is sufficiently higher then the density of the first placed component to facilitate gravity mixing of the two components as the second placed component moves through the first placed component and in the process activation occurs.

A pre-stressed annular sealant and method of creating a durable seal in a well bore annulus which is based on hydraulic cement that is designed to be easily pumped and placed into a casing-wellbore annulus, to set into a hardened mass, and to then undergo post-set crystal growth and phase changes in the crystalline matrix to combat inherent volumetric shrinkage and to create internally-generated compressive stress in the cement matrix. This internally-generated compressive pre-stressing compensates for tensile stress induced by well operations. The tensile stress must be greater in magnitude than the magnitude of the compressive pre-stress plus the magnitude of the cement's tensile strength before the cement sheath will fail in tension. This expansion and pre-stressing also creates significantly higher shear bond strengths than those developed with ordinary hydraulic cement.

Pre-stressed annular sealant and method of creating a durable seal in a well bore annulus

A method of mitigating proppant settling in a hydraulic fracture in order to better suspend the proppant as well as ensure a more uniform pack, by mixing a pre-determined volume percent of low density additive, such as glass beads or other suitable material, such as polylactic acid particles, into the fracturing slurry along with the standard high-density proppant, it is anticipated that density gradients can be induced inside the fracture. Upward movement of low density additive due to them having density lower than the carrier fluid will interfere with downward movement of high-density proppant and vice versa. This mutual interference between the two proppants confined in the narrow fracture will significantly hinder the settling/segregation of the high-density proppant. The low density material has a specific gravity of about 0.3, particle size distribution similar to that of standard proppant, and sufficient mechanical strength to survive fracture closure stress.
