Target substrates are electrostatically coated by flowing an electrically isolated wet coating composition containing waterborne coalescable polymeric binder into an electrostatic coating apparatus (), depositing the coating composition onto a rotating electrostatically-charged atomizer () and then onto the target substrate, flowing an electrically isolated aqueous cleaning liquid into the apparatus before deposition of the coating composition onto the rotating atomizer is halted or interrupted, and depositing the aqueous cleaning liquid onto the atomizer before or within a sufficiently short time after a halt or interruption in coating composition deposition onto the atomizer so that a coalesced polymeric binder film does not accumulate on the atomizer.

Electrostatic spray apparatus and method

A cement fiberboard substrate is treated on at least one edge of the substrate with an aqueous solution containing at least one phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid. The treated edge is overcoated with a sealer, primer or topcoat. The resulting prefinished fiber cement siding product has improved coating adhesion, especially near burnished regions and near edges and corners proximate the burnished regions. A phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid also may be added to the sealer to provide further improvement in coating adhesion.

Treatment for cement composite articles

A coated article including a cement fiberboard substrate and a coating system applied to the substrate, wherein the coating system comprises (i) at least one acid-functional alkali-soluble polymer having a backbone substantially free of linear or branched aliphatic alkyl repeating units having more than 3 backbone carbon carbons, (ii) at least one water-soluble silicate salt and (iii) water.
