Novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## as well as novel compositions thereof and methods of using same are described. These compounds have been found to be valuable for controlling, modifying and inhibiting the growth of plants.

Herbicidal and plant growth regulant diphenylpyridazinones

A liquid alkali metal silicate composition comprises water, an alkali metal, e.g., sodium silicate, glyoxal, optionally a Group I-III metal salt, e.g., calcium chloride, and hydrogen peroxide, and from 0.5 to 2.0 moles of a polyhydroxy compound per mole of glyoxal used. The specific polyols are mannitol, glycerol and sucrose. This composition is easily pumpable and injectable at a temperature of 100.degree. F. or higher.

Composition and process for modifying gelation of alkali metal silicates

A liquid alkali metal silicate composition comprises water, an alkali metal, e.g., sodium silicate, and as curing agent for said alkali metal silicate, a derivative of glyoxal which is 2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane or glyoxal trimer. The composition optionally contains a Group I-III metal salt, e.g., calcium chloride and hydrogen peroxide. It is easily pumpable and injectable at a temperature of 100.degree. F. or higher.

Controlling the curing time of alkali metal silicates using derivatives

Valuable pyridazinone intermediates to pharmaceutically useful compounds can be prepared in surprisingly high yields by the reaction of the corresponding monohydrazone with diketene, preferably in the presence of a basic catalyst. In an especially preferred embodiment, p,p'-dichlorobenzil monohydrazone and diketene are reacted in a xylene solvent in the presence of triethylamine to afford 4-acetyl-5,6-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-2H-pyridazin-3-one, which can then be reacted with ethylene carbonate in the presence of potassium carbonate to afford the antihypertensive agent, 4-acetyl-5,6-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-2-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-2H-pyridazine-3-one.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## are useful antihypertensive agents.

Antihypertensive pyridazin(2H)-3-ones

Certain imidazothiazoles and thiazolopyrimidines have been found to prevent and inhibit the formation of granuloma tissue in animals. This result is accomplished by administering to the animal subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, R' is hydrogen, lower alkyl or thioalkyl, carboxy methyl, or phenyl; R' is lower alkyl, 2-benzofuranyl, naphthyl, phenyl, or mono- or disubstituted phenyl. The hydrated precursors of certain of these compounds as well as the acid addition and quaternary salts of both the compounds and their hydrated precursors may be employed.

Antiinflammatory imidazothiazoles and thiazolopyrimidines

Certain imidazothiazoles and thiazolopyrimidines have been found to prevent and inhibit the formation of granuloma tissue in animals. This result is accomplished by administering to the animal subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN R is hydrogen or methyl, R' is hydrogen, lower alkyl or thioalkyl, carboxy methyl, or phenyl; R' is lower alkyl, 2-benzofuranyl, naphthyl, phenyl, or mono- or disubstituted phenyl. The hydrated precursors of certain of these compounds as well as the acid addition and quaternary salts of both the compounds and their hydrated precursors may be employed.
