The invention provides methods for designing contact lenses in which method the lens flexure is taken into account. The method of the invention is insensitive to the lens' back surface design and does not require complex back surface designs. Additionally, the lens design can be optimized virtually, eliminating the need for iterative design-test on-eye-re-design cycles.

Modified MZ (Mach-Zender) interferometers preferably are utilized to analyze the transmitted, aspherical wavefront of an ophthalmic lens by mounting the lens in a cuvette having a rotatable carousel that can hold multiple lenses. Fresh, temperature controlled, saline solution is circulated about the lenses, and the cuvette is positioned in a vertical test arm of the interferometer configuration. Reverse raytracing preferably is utilized to remove aberrations induced into the wavefront as it is imaged from immediately behind the lens to the detector of the interferometer.

An emulator including a beam splitter for splitting incoming light energy into a first component directed along a first optical path, and a second component directed along a second optical path distinct from the first optical path. The emulator includes a first receptacle positioned to pass light energy directed along only the first optical path. The first receptacle is capable of receiving an add lens for providing an add power. A beam combiner is positioned to combine light energy of the second component with light energy of the first component that has passed the first receptacle, i.e. to have the add power applied, and to direct the combined light energy along a common optical path. Additional receptacles are provided that are capable of receiving a sphere and/or a cylindrical lens in position to pass the combined light energy traveling along the common optical path.

Simultaneous vision emulation for fitting of corrective multifocal contact lenses

The invention provides contact lenses that substantially block either or both UV and blue light from entering the lens wearer's pupil by providing multiple concentric areas of certain materials that decrease or substantially eliminate the UV and blue light transmission. The lenses of the invention accomplish the light blocking without degrading the lens wearer's vision.

The invention provides lenses that are designed by taking into account one or more of pupil size, field, and decentration.

A gonioscopic lens system which provides a real image of the anterior chamber angle of a patient's eye. The lens system includes a first lens group having a concave posterior surface configured to be placed on a patient's eye, a second lens group optically aligned with the first lens group; and a stop positioned between the first and second lens groups. An achromatic gonioscopic lens system which provides a real image of the anterior chamber angle of a patient's eye is also provided, as well as an ophthalmoscopy lens system for viewing both the anterior chamber angle and the retina of a patient's eye.

Ophthalmoscopy lens system

The invention provides lenses for correcting presbyopia in which the near vision segments interfere at least about 50% less with distance vision than do the near vision segments in conventional contact lenses.

Multifocal ophthalmic lenses

The invention provides multifocal lenses for correction of presbyopia. Each of the lenses of the invention provide both distance and near vision correction by providing both a first multifocal region, a monofocal region, and a second multifocal region within the same lens.

An apparatus and method for measuring wavefront aberrations. A beam splitter separates the aberrated wavefront into two components, mirror arrays focus each of the components to a plurality of discrete lines with the discrete lines of one component having a different orientation than the discrete lines of the other component, and an imaging device detects the discrete lines to determine wavefront aberrations.
