A summing unit within telecommunications system includes: port to receive digital data stream from another device; and summer function. Digital data stream includes first and second digital data derived from first and second base station. First and second digital data comprises first and second digital values associated with respective time periods. Summing unit extracts first digital data from digital data stream. Summer function digitally sums first digital data with third digital data derived from third base station to generate summed digital data for conversion to radio frequency signals and transmission at antenna. Third digital data comprises third series of third digital values associated with respective time periods. Summer function digitally sums first digital data with third digital data by digitally summing (i) first digital value associated with respective time period and (ii) third digital value associated with respective time period to produce summed value for respective time period.

Timeslot mapping and/or aggregation element for digital radio frequency transport architecture

A serial link interface unit includes serialized data stream interfaces configured to receive a serialized data stream having a data rate and set of timeslots; an aggregate serialized data stream interface configured to communicate an aggregate serialized data stream having aggregate data rate and plurality of aggregate timeslot sets each coming sequentially in time, wherein a second aggregate timeslot set comes after a first aggregate timeslot set; and wherein the serial link interface unit interleaves data from the different serialized data streams received at the plurality of first interfaces by mapping data from a first timeslot from each different serialized data stream to the first aggregate timeslot set in the aggregate serialized data stream and mapping data from a second timeslot from each different serialized data stream to the second aggregate timeslot set in the aggregate serialized data stream.

A communication system includes master host unit, hybrid expansion unit, analog remote antenna unit, and digital remote antenna unit. Master host unit communicates analog signals with at least a first service provider interface using first bands of analog spectrum. Master host unit and hybrid expansion unit communicate first N-bit words of digitized spectrum over first digital link. Hybrid expansion unit converts between first N-bit words and second bands of analog spectrum. Hybrid expansion unit and analog remote antenna unit communicate second bands over analog medium. Analog remote antenna unit transmits and receives first plurality of wireless signals over air interfaces. Master host unit and digital remote antenna unit communicate second N-bit words of digitized spectrum over second digital link. Digital remote antenna unit converts between second N-bit words and third bands of analog spectrum. Digital remote antenna unit transmits and receives second wireless signals over air interfaces.

Distributed antenna system with combination of both all digital transport and hybrid digital/analog transport

A distributed antenna system includes a host unit communicatively coupled to a first service provider interface which receives a first signal from the first service provider interface; and a first remote antenna unit communicatively coupled to the host unit, the first remote antenna unit having a first antenna. A base station to which the distributed antenna system is communicatively coupled is configured with a subscriber access timing window having a minimum allowed delay and a maximum allowed delay. The distributed antenna system is configured so that a first total delay between the host unit and the first remote antenna unit is equal to or greater than the minimum allowed delay. The first antenna of the first remote antenna unit is configured to communicate the first signal to a first subscriber unit.

Timing adjustments for small cell distributed antenna systems

A communication system includes master host unit, hybrid expansion unit, and remote antenna unit. Master host unit communicates analog signals with service provider interfaces. Master host unit and hybrid expansion unit communicate N-bit words of digitized spectrum over communication link. Hybrid expansion unit converts between N-bit words and analog spectrum. Hybrid expansion unit and remote antenna unit communicate analog spectrum over analog communication medium. Remote antenna unit transmits and receives wireless signals over air interfaces. Master host unit includes master clock distribution unit that generates digital master reference clock signal. Master host unit communicates digital master reference clock signal over communication link. Hybrid expansion unit receives digital master reference clock signal from master host unit over communication link and generates analog reference clock signal based on digital master reference clock signal. Hybrid expansion unit sends, and remote antenna unit receives, analog reference clock signal across analog communication medium.

Distributed digital reference clock

Communication system includes first unit; and second unit(s) having processing unit(s), downstream signal path(s), and upstream signal path(s). First unit communicates downstream digital transport signal (including digital representation of original downstream RF signal received at first unit) to second unit(s). Second unit uses processing unit and downstream signal path to generate downstream RF signal (for radiation from antenna) from downstream digital transport signal; and communicates upstream digital transport signal (generated from upstream RF signal received at second unit(s) using processing unit(s) and upstream signal path(s)) to first unit. Upstream digital transport signal includes digital representation of received upstream RF signal. Feedback path digitizes downstream RF signal(s) to provide digital representation(s) of downstream RF signal radiated from antenna to processing unit(s). Second unit pre-distorts input signal to downstream signal path for non-linearities in downstream signal path using digital representation of downstream RF signal radiated from antenna as received from feedback path.

Distributed antenna system architectures

A distributed base station radio system includes a first radio head configured to: communicate first analog radio frequency signals in a first radio frequency band with a first subscriber unit; convert between the first analog radio frequency signals in the first radio frequency band and a first digital broadband signal through at least one of frequency conversion and analog to digital conversion; a first broadband to channelized conversion unit communicatively coupled to the first radio head and configured to communicate the first digital broadband signal with the first broadband to channelized conversion unit; wherein the first broadband to channelized conversion unit is further configured to: communicate the first digital broadband signal; convert between the first digital broadband signal and first digital channelized data for the first radio frequency band; and communicate the first digital channelized data for the first radio frequency band with a first channelized radio frequency interface.

Universal remote radio head

Digital distributed antenna systems and methods for advanced cellular communication protocols are provided. In one embodiment, a digital distributed antenna system comprises: a host unit; a plurality of remote antenna units each communicatively coupled to the host unit, wherein a first digitized RF signal comprising a plurality of data streams is communicated between the host unit and a first remote antenna unit of the plurality of remote antenna units; and a signal conditioning and control module that converts an original version of at least a first data stream to baseband data, wherein the signal conditioning and control module replaces the original version of the first data stream in the first digitized RF signal with a modified version of the first data stream by modifying data derived from the baseband data.

Digital distributed antenna systems and methods for advanced cellular communication protocols

One embodiment is directed to a distributed antenna system comprising a host unit and at least one remote antenna unit that is communicatively coupled to the host unit. The host unit is configured to communicate a downstream transport signal from the host unit to the remote antenna unit. The remote antenna unit to which the downstream transport signal is communicated uses the downstream transport signal to generate a downstream radio frequency signal for radiation from an antenna associated with the remote antenna unit. The remote antenna unit is configured to communicate an upstream transport signal from the remote antenna unit to the host unit, wherein the upstream transport signal is generated from a received upstream radio frequency signal received at the remote antenna unit. The remote antenna unit is configured to perform self-interference suppression processing in an upstream signal path using, as an input thereto, a feedback signal derived from the downstream radio frequency signal radiated from the antenna. Other embodiments are disclosed.

A distributed antenna system (DAS) includes host that receives downstream signals corresponding to radio frequency (RF) channel and remote antenna units (RAUs) communicatively coupled to host. Host communicates downstream transport signal derived from downstream signals received at host to RAUs. Each RAU uses downstream transport signal to generate downstream RF signal for radiation from antenna associated with RAU. Downstream RF signal comprises a subset of plurality of downstream frequency bands. Each RAU receives upstream RF signal including respective RF channel. Each RAU communicates upstream transport signal derived from upstream RF signal to host. Host uses upstream transport signal to generate upstream signal including at least one upstream frequency band. Host analyzes attribute of downstream and upstream transport signals associated with RAUs, correlates analyzed attribute for each RAU with profile, and determines current capacity usage of RAUs based on correlation. Host dynamically allocates capacity amongst RAUs based on current capacity usage.

Distributed antenna system with dynamic capacity allocation and power adjustment

Systems and methods for IP communication over a distributed antenna system transport are provided. In one embodiment, a method for providing Ethernet connectivity over a distributed antenna system comprises receiving internet protocol (IP) formatted data from an internet protocol device coupled to a remote unit of a distributed antenna system; sampling wireless radio frequency (RF) signals received at the remote unit to produce digitized RF samples; generating a serial data stream for output to a host unit of the distributed antenna system, the serial data stream further comprising a multiple-timeslot communication frame providing a first partition of bandwidth for transporting the digitized RF samples and a second partition of bandwidth for implementing an Ethernet pipe for transporting the IP formatted data.

Systems and methods for IP communication over a distributed antenna system transport

A host unit (for use within a DAS having a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit) includes a plurality of base transceiver stations and a switch. Each base transceiver station is configured to operate on a RF channel. Each base transceiver station is configure to provide a downstream baseband digital signal to the switch and to receive an upstream baseband digital signal from the switch. Each downstream and upstream baseband digital signal is a digital representation of the RF channel at baseband of the respective base transceiver station. The switch is configured to route each downstream baseband digital signal to a respective subset of the remote units as one or more downstream serial data streams and to route each upstream baseband digital signal from one or more upstream serial data streams to a respective subset of the base transceiver stations.

Evolved distributed antenna system

A distributed base station radio system includes first channelized to broadband conversion unit that receives first downlink channelized data for first radio frequency band from first channelized radio frequency source; and first universal remote radio head communicatively coupled to first channelized to broadband conversion unit. First channelized to broadband conversion unit converts first downlink channelized data into a first downlink broadband signal. First channelized to broadband conversion unit communicates the first downlink broadband signal to first universal remote radio head. First universal remote radio head receives first downlink broadband signal. First universal remote radio head frequency converts the first downlink broadband signal into first downlink radio frequency signals in first radio frequency band. First universal remote radio head is further configured to transmit first downlink radio frequency signals in first radio frequency band to first subscriber unit.
