An interbody fusion device in one embodiment includes a tapered body defining a hollow interior or chamber for receiving bone graft or bone substitute material. The body defines exterior threads which are interrupted over portions of the outer surface of the device. The fusion device includes truncated side walls so that on end view the body takes on a cylindrical form. In another embodiment, the tapered body is solid and formed of a porous biocompatible material having sufficient structural integrity to maintain the intradiscal space and normal curvature. The material is preferably a porous tantalum composite having fully interconnected pores to facilitate complete bone tissue ingrowth into the implant. In further embodiments, the fusion devices are provided with osteogenic material to facilitate bone ingrowth. A cap is also provided to block the opening of hollow fusion devices. The cap includes an occlusion body and an elongated anchor. In some embodiments the anchor includes a lip which is engageable to openings in the body wall.

An interbody fusion device includes a pair of lateral spacers and a pair of central spacers, each sized for percutaneous introduction through a disc resection portal in the disc annulus. Each of the lateral spacers includes opposing side faces defining a channel therein, while each of the central spacers includes arms at their opposite ends configured to be received within a channel of a corresponding lateral spacer. The arms and channels are interlocking to prevent separation of the components once assembled within the intradiscal space. The assembly of the central and lateral spacers defines a cavity therebetween for insertion of bone graft material. The central and lateral spacers are configured so that the bone graft cavity is oriented over the weakest, but most vascular and biologically active, bone of the vertebral body, while the lateral spacers are situated adjacent the disc annulus and over the strongest vertebral bone.

Anterior interbody fusion device

A cleaning roller having a soft fibrous surface (such as lamb's wool roller) is disposed ahead of the blanket cylinder of an offset press, the surface presenting a nap which swells upon rotation of the roller to wipe particulate matter (dusting powder or residue particles) from the paper sheets before the same are printed. A trough containing water (in which the particles are soluble) extends parallel to the roller and receives the particles stripped from the roller by a doctor blade. The removed particles are directed from the blade to the trough by a guide surface continuous with the blade which is presented by a specially shaped sheet member extending from the blade into the trough. The water may be recirculated by a pump, or supplied and drained at a rate to prevent the particles from accumulating.
