An apparatus for receiving and automatically moving a moving strand of fibers from a starting position to any one of a plurality of predetermined positions in a multi-grooved separator roll is disclosed. This apparatus is particularly in processes of making continuous fiber products from molten material and replaces a manual operation that presented safety problems.

A method for melting and refining glass, such as E glass, comprises feeding glass batch materials into a melting and refining tank for melting and refining the glass batch materials into glass and a forehearth, downstream of the tank, for further refining the glass and delivering the glass to fiberizing means. The melting and refining tank is heated with oxygen fired burners. The oxygen fired burners in the melting and refining tank are located in the sidewalls at the upstream end of the tank and extend for about one-third, one-half or two-thirds the length of the tank. In one embodiment, burners are also located in the upstream end wall. This arrangement of the oxygen fired burners at the upstream end of the melting and refining tank moves the melter hot spot upstream for better refining of the glass and enables the furnace to produce a higher output of glass than can be obtained in a conventional E glass furnace of the same size.

Apparatus and methods of using the apparatus to automate a labor intensive portion of the process of making continuous fiber products, like chopped glass fiber. In this process many fiberizers are used, each fiberizer forming as many as several thousand fibers. Fibers break frequently requiring the fiberizers to be restarted and this has always been a labor intensive part of the process. By controlling the design and operational parameters in accordance with particular relationships fibers having an average diameter of 7 microns or less can be formed by passing molten material through orifices in a peripheral wall of a rotor without using conventional hot gas blast attenuation externally of the rotor. The primary fibers are broken into finite lengths to produce staple fiber by a plurality of relatively cool and relatively low pressure air streams which are circumferentially spaced about the rotor and which flow in a direction transverse to the direction of travel of the primary fibers as they exit the orifices in the rotor. The rotors utilized in the perferred embodiment of the present invention have a peripheral wall with at least 40,000 orifices having diameters of about 18 mils or less. As one of the design parameters, orifice diameter, changes during the life of the rotor, operational parameters are adjusted to maintain the desired relationships between the various design and operational parameters.
