An extruded monofilament is formed from a compatibilized blend of polyphenylene sulfide and a polyamide resin. The blend is compatibilized by the addition of a compatibilizing resin selected from the group consisting of chemically modified and functionalized polyolefins. Preferably, from about 25 to about 99 parts by weight of a polyphenylene sulfide resin and from about 75 to 1 parts by weight of at least one polyamide resin, together with from about 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a compatibilizer are blended and extruded to form the monofilament. The resultant monofilament exhibits improved physical properties as compared to unblended polyphenylene sulfide resins (PPS), as well as uncompatibilized blends of PPS with other materials. The monofilaments prepared from these compatibilized blends are useful as components of industrial fabrics, particularly fabrics such as are used as belts on paper forming machines. The polymer blend and a process for the manufacture of the monofilaments are also provided.

A monofilament which exhibits improved hydrolytic stability properties as compared to conventional polyester monofilaments is formed from the extrusion of a blend of PPS and at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of PET, a high temperature polyester resin and polyphenylene oxide and possibly, a hydrolytic stabilizing agent. The monofilament is produced without the inclusion of compatibilizers or fillers, even though PPS is known to be incompatible with PET and high temperature polyester resins in most applications. A fabric may be produced having increased resistance to hydrolytic degradation and includes a plurality of woven monofilaments, comprising a blend of PPS with at least one other polymer selected from the group consisting of PET, a high temperature polyester resin and polyphenylene oxide and, a hydrolytic stabilizing agent. Such fabrics have utility as fabrics for the dryer sections of paper machines. Methods for the production of such monofilaments are also provided.

A degradable, reusable, partially synthetic and partially non-synthetic bedding material for animals includes a plurality of flexible monofilaments formed from a blend of a thermoplastic polymer and starch. An effective amount of at least one transition metal salt may also be added to enhance ultraviolet and/or thermal degradation. The partially synthetic animal bedding has an appearance, texture and sound very similar to that of natural straw, but can be cleaned and reused repeatedly. The partially synthetic straw-like material is inert as far as digestibility and is degradable when exposed to sunlight and dry heat, and is biodegradable and compostable thereby providing for relatively easy disposal.

A cross-linkable nylon composition and is useful for coated sewing threads. The compositions comprises a nylon terpolymer; from about 1 to 20 percent by weight of a low residual formaldehyde cross-linkable resin, based upon the weight of the terpolymer; from about 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of a catalyst for the cross-linkable resin, based upon the weight therof and a suitable solvent for the terpolymer in an amount sufficient to form at least a 5 percent solution by weight of the terpolymer. Coated sewing threads comprise a sewing thread and from about 0.1 to 20 percent by weight of the cross-linked nylon composition, based upon the weight of the thread.

Polyphenylene sulfide blends with melt extrudable polymers form novel monofilaments. The monofilament is prepared by extruding a mixture of the linear polyphenylene sulfide and the melt extrudable polymer to form a monofilament blend, quenching the monofilament and thereafter drawing the monofilament to a ratio of from about 3:1 to 6:1. The resulting filament can be employed for the manufacture of fabric.

A blend of two resins forming a novel monofilament comprises from about 50 to 95 parts by weight of a linear polyphenylene sulfide and, from about 5 to 50 parts by weight of a melt extrudable copolymer consisting essentially of an olefin and a halogenated monomer. The monofilament is prepared by extruding a mixture of the linear poly phenylene sulfide and the melt extrudable copolymer to form a monofilament and thereafter drawing the monofilament to a ratio of from about 3.5:1 to 6.0:1. The filament can be employed for the manufacture of fabric.

The invention disclosed herein provides a process for the high temperature extrusion of polyvinyl alcohol monofilament soluble in water comprising the steps of blending from about 80 to 98 percent by weight polyvinyl alcohol resin having a number average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to 200,000 and a degree of hydrolysis of from about 85 to 91 percent with from about 20 to 2 percent by weight of a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of hydroxyethers, diols, triols and other polyols and mixtures thereof, reducing the moisture content of the resin to a level of less than about one percent and the volatile content thereof to a level of less than about two percent and, melt extruding the blend to form monofilaments. A novel high temperature extruded polyvinyl alcohol monofilament, soluble in water, comprises from about 80 to 98 percent by weight polyvinyl alcohol resin having a number average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to 200,000 and a degree of hydrolysis of from about 85 to 91 percent and from about 20 to 2 percent by weight of a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of hydroxyethers having an average molecular weight of less than 325 and greater than 550 and having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and R.sub.1 is hydrogen, an alkyl group having from one to about 12 carbons and aromatic groups having from six to about 10 carbon atoms and n is an integer that will provide the aforementioned average molecular weight, diols, triols and other polyols having from two to about 10 carbons including mixtures thereof.
