An apparatus for lancing skin and collecting a liquid sample. The apparatus having a housing with an outer periphery and a rotatable arm having a lance to puncture the skin. A sample collection area is attached to the arm. The arm of the apparatus rotates from a first position to a second position. As the arm rotates, the lance extends beyond the housing allowing the lance to contact the user's skin and create a lance site. As the arm continues to move to the second position, the lance is brought out of contact with the user's skin and back within the housing while the collection area is brought into position. When the arm is located in the second position, the collection area is in substantially the same location as the lance site on the user's skin.

A method and apparatus are provided for calibrating a sensor for determination of analyte concentration. The meter includes a sensor for receiving a user sample to be measured and a processor for performing a predefined test sequence for measuring a predefined parameter value. A memory can be coupled to the processor for storing predefined parameter data values. A calibration code is associated with the sensor and read by the processor before the user sample to be measured is received. The calibration code is used in measuring the predefined parameter data value to compensate for different sensor characteristics.

Method and apparatus for calibrating a sensor element

The present invention concerns an electrochemical sensor made up of an insulating base having an electrode layer on its surface and a lid of deformable material which comprises a concave area in the central portion thereof, so that when it is mated with the base, the lid and base form a capillary space containing the electrode layer. When the electrode layer is in operative contact with a reaction layer comprising an enzyme which will cause the production of mobile electrons when contacted with a suitable analyte, the concentration of analyte, e.g. glucose in blood, can be measured by measuring the current created by the flow of mobile electrons when contacted with a suitable analyte, the concentration of analyte, e.g. glucose in blood, can be measured by measuring the current created by the flow of mobile electrons.

Electrochemical biosensor

Disclosed is an electrochemical sensor which is made up of an insulating base plate bearing an electrode on its surface which reacts with an analyte to produce mobile electrons. The base plate is mated with a lid of a deformable material which has a concave area surrounded by a flat surface so that when mated to the base plate there is formed a capillary space into which a fluid test sample can be drawn. The side of the lid facing the base is coated with a polymeric material which serves to bond the lid to the base plate and to increase the hydrophilic nature of the capillary space.

A method of making and an amperometric electrode are provided. An electrode carbon ink is applied to a polymer substrate to form a working electrode. The substrate carrying the working electrode is placed in a gas plasma cleaner, such as an oxygen or nitrogen plasma, to clean the working electrode. A high radio frequency signal excites the gas plasma for a short exposure time in a range between 10 seconds and 30 seconds. Then a reagent layer is deposited to the plasma treated working electrode.

Method of making and amperometric electrodes

A reagent strip calibration system utilizes an electrical connection system particularly usable for making electrical connections to one-time use devices such as reagent strips. The connection employs a plurality of U-shaped contacts fabricated from a hard metal wire such as tungsten, beryllium copper or a nickel/iron alloy that is self-supporting or supported by an elastomer that also provides contact pressure between the wire and the one-time use device while providing low insertion force. Such a connection system is particularly suitable for use with a system for analyzing the chemical properties of an analyte that is placed on a reagent strip. The manner in which the chemical properties of the reagent strip are to be analyzed are defined by areas of different resistance disposed on the reagent strip and contacted by the U-shaped contacts to permit measurement of the resistance of the various areas to obtain the information needed to define the properties of the reagent strip.
