The invention provides photographic paper having increased image stability. The invention is generally accomplished by forming a paper sheet, drying said paper in a first stage to below about 10 percent water, then applying a polyvinyl alcohol solution to both sides of said paper sheet, drying said paper in a second stage to below about 5 percent water, and then applying further polyvinyl alcohol solution to said paper and drying in a third stage. The paper then may be coated to form a silver halide photosensitive color paper. The paper contains between about 4 and about 6 weight percent of polyvinyl alcohol that is concentrated near the surface of said paper. Further, the paper has a oxygen leak rate of less than about 25 cc/m.sup.2 /day and an oxygen GTR rate of less than about 1 cc/m.sup.2 /day.

A photographic paper having a print retaining layer including a granular tooth providing ingredient in a binder polymer having a T.sub.g of 30.degree. to 65.degree. C. which is the addition product of from about 30 to about 98 mol percent of an alkylmethacrylate wherein the alkyl group has from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, from about 2 to about 10 mol percent of an alkali metal salt of a ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic or carboxylic acid, from 0 to about 65 mol percent of a vinyl benzene monomer and from 0 to about 5 mol percent of a crosslinking agent containing two ethylenically unsaturated bonds.

A photographic element comprising a paper substrate said paper substrate comprises wood fiber and polyvinyl alcohol polymer located in heavier concentration near the surface of said paper with a polyolefin coating provided on at least one surface, a hydrophilic colloid layer on the polyolefin coating and a light sensitive silver halide emulsion on the hydrophilic colloid layer, said hydrophilic colloid layer comprising from about 20 to 80 percent by weight of a white pigment, and from about 15 to 35 percent by weight of hollow microspheres having a diameter of from about 0.1 to about 1 .mu.m.
