An ultrasonic handpiece assembly has a horn, a rear mass attached to a rear end of the horn, a needle attached to a front end of the horn, a stack of piezoelectric elements arranged coaxially about the horn, and an L-T spring arranged coaxially about the horn behind the stack. The horn includes a low gain section in front of the stack and a high gain section in front of the low gain section. The assembly has a first L-T mode, a T mode, a second L-T mode, and an L mode at different resonant frequencies. The low gain horn section includes a circumferential groove located at a vibrational node of the L-T mode. Frequency separation between the first L-T mode and T mode results in torsional vibration of the first L-T mode interacting constructively with torsional vibration of the T mode, thereby increasing torsional stroke in the T mode.

Ultrasonic handpiece assembly

A multi-lumen sensing system () includes medical tubing () having a plurality of lumens (A,B) and at least one secondary passageway () extending in an axial direction of the medical tubing, wherein the secondary passageway is between the plurality of lumens. The multi-lumen sensing system may include a sensing receptacle () defining a channel () in which a lengthwise portion of the medical tubing is received. A plurality of ultrasonic transmitting elements (T,T) may be arranged within the secondary passageway of the medical tubing or as part of the sensing receptacle for transmitting respective ultrasonic signals across the lumens to a corresponding plurality of ultrasonic receiving elements (R,R) of the sensing receptacle. Alternatively, the sensing receptacle may include a plurality of ultrasonic transmitting and receiving elements () transmitting respective signals across the lumens for return reflection at an interface of the secondary passageway.

A method for releasing a fluid from a pressure vessel assembly, the method including the steps of providing: &#x2014;a pressure vessel; a piezo electric device; and an electric field generator; arranging the piezo electric device in a sealed relationship with a part of the pressure vessel, thereby providing the pressure vessel assembly, providing a fluid contained within the pressure vessel assembly under pressure, and using the electric field generator to apply an electric field to the piezo electric device, such that the piezo electric device fails, thereby releasing the fluid from the pressure vessel assembly.

Method for releasing a fluid from a pressure vessel assembly

A phacoemsulsification needle for use with an ultrasonic handpiece in performing cataract surgery has a plurality of external grooves along its shaft. The external grooves are configured to convert longitudinal drive motion delivered by the handpiece at the base of the needle into torsional motion at the needle tip. The torsional motion at the needle tip has a magnitude greater than the magnitude of the longitudinal drive motion at the base, i.e. the longitudinal to torsional gain is greater than one. The grooves may be helical grooves, wherein the groove configuration is defined by a set of groove parameters including a helical pitch of the grooves, a width of the grooves, a depth of the grooves, an axial length of the grooves, and a total number of grooves.
