A computer-implemented method for repurposing one or more software configurable layer 2 switches in an IP (Internet Protocal) computer network to function as a layer 1 switch. Ternary Content-Addressable Memory (TCAM) is reconfigured in each of the one or more layer 2 switches and one or more pipeline engines are routed to emulate layer 1 switching functionality in each of the one or more layer 2 switches.

System and method for repurposing layer 2 switch as a layer 1 switch

An automated network test system includes an integrated network switch connected to a network under test. The network switch includes a first and second plurality of network switch ports. The network switch further includes a physical layer engine coupled to the first plurality of network switch ports. The network switch also includes at least one processor having a plurality of processing cores that can each asynchronously execute a test execution context and a test engine having a plurality of dynamically configurable function modules. The test engine is coupled to the second plurality of network switch ports, the physical layer engine and at least one processor. The test engine is configured for automatic testing of the network under test.

Consolidation of network test automation tools

A network switch includes first and second clock-and-data-recovery (CDR) circuits, a cross-bar switch electrically coupling the first and second CDR circuits, and a test pattern generation circuit electrically coupled to the first CDR circuit. The test pattern generation circuit is configured to generate a test pattern and transmit the test pattern from the first CDR circuit to the second CDR circuit via the cross-bar switch. The network switch also includes a test pattern checking circuit electrically coupled to the second CDR circuit and configured to verify the test pattern received at the second CDR circuit.

Methods and systems for calibrating a network switch

A network switch includes first and second clock-and-data-recovery (CDR) circuits, a cross-bar switch to couple the first and second CDR circuits, and a first test pattern generation circuit electrically coupled with the first CDR circuit. The first test pattern generation circuit is configured to generate a test pattern and transmit the test pattern from the first CDR circuit to the second CDR circuit via the cross-bar switch. The network switch also includes a first test pattern checking circuit, electrically coupled with the second CDR circuit, to verify the test pattern received at the second CDR circuit.

The network switch is configured to enable monitoring of switched data. The network switch includes a housing and one or more port cards. Each port card has one or more physical ports and includes switching circuitry to selectively create a communication path between two physical ports. The network switch also includes packet analyzer circuitry, situated within the housing, to monitor data packets switched via a communication path between two physical ports without substantially degrading signal integrity of the data packets.

Network switch with onboard diagnostics and statistics collection

A method for suppression of EMI emissions around an opening of an electronic enclosure that holds a physical layer switch. Fiber optic cables are installed on a plurality of ports attached to the switch such that the cables pass through the opening in the cabinet. The cables are divided into a plurality of discrete bundles. An enclosure is placed around each bundle while the enclosure is in an open state and thereafter the enclosure is closed such that the enclosure surrounds the bundle. The enclosure is designed such that it suppresses EMI emissions. After the enclosures are closed, they are positioned in an arrangement in the opening of the electronic enclosure.

Method for suppression of EMI emissions

A Fiber Channel switch is presented that tracks the congestion status of destination ports in an XOFF mask at each input. A mapping is maintained between virtual channels on an ISL and the destination ports to allow changes in the XOFF mask to trigger a primitive to an upstream port that provides virtual channel flow control. The XOFF mask is also used to avoid sending frames to a congested port. Instead, these frames are stored on a single deferred queue and later processed in a manner designed to maintain frame ordering. A routing system is provided that applies multiple routing rules in parallel to perform line speed routing. The preferred switch fabric is cell based, with techniques used to manage path maintenance for variable length frames and to adapt to varying transmission rates in the system. Finally, the switch allows data and microprocessor communication to share the same crossbar network.

Fibre channel switch

A switch segments variable length frames into cells for transmission over a cell-based switch fabric and handles rate differences between the input data rate and the switch fabric data rate. The fabric handles multiple cell packets by maintaining a switch path until a certain number of cells are transmitted as indicated in a length field in the first data cell. The first cell contains a full data payload, and a length field value sufficient to handle a maximum length frame. Subsequent cells can contain less than a full data payload, with the number of valid bytes in the cell being indicated in the length field. The last cell used to segment the frame contains an end of frame indicator. The indicator signals the destination port side of the switch to terminate the packet path in the switch fabric prematurely&#x2014;before the number of cells indicated in the first data cell.
