Apparatus for disconnecting, sterilizing and making new tubing connection. The apparatus includes electromechanical means for sensing the presence of a clamp to prevent fluid leaks during operation. The apparatus also includes means for forcing compliance with a predetermined sequence of operations. All electronic components are contained in the top of the apparatus to isolate same from any potential fluid leads which will naturally flow over and into the base of the apparatus.

A multi-position rotary valve system is useable with a disposable fluid transfer set for carrying out a sequence of steps to implement a drain and fill procedure in connection with peritoneal dialysis. A method of carrying out peritoneal dialysis includes utilizing a rotary, multi-position, valve system in conjunction with a fluid flow transfer set having a plurality of flexible fluid flow conduits. The valve system provides for systematically opening and closing the respective fluid flow conduits in a predetermined sequence for the purpose of carrying out a drain and fill procedure of the type associated with peritoneal dialysis.

A pair of separate conduits, each having an internal seal zone, may be joined by the method which comprises sealingly joining the ends of the conduits together; thereafter adding an antiseptic into the area of the joined conduits between internal seals formed in the zones; and then opening said internal seals without separating the conduits to permit internal fluid flow through the joined conduits.

A system is provided for connection of a transfer spike on the end of a tube with another tube, in which the connection portions may be ultraviolet sterilized prior to connection. Both the spike and the tube for connection communicate with a housing member having a tubular, collapsible sheath member which is ultraviolet transparent. Also, a clamping system may be provided for closing flow through the system.
