A device for minimizing cigarette sidestream smoke and reducing free-burn rate of a burning cigarette is disclosed. The device comprises a non-combustible tubular element encasing an effective length of a tobacco charge of a cigarette located in the tubular element. The tubular element minimizes sidestream smoke emission from a burning tobacco charge and reduces free-burn rate of such burning tobacco charge to increase the number of puffs from the burning tobacco charge.

A cigarette sidestream smoke treatment material made from a sheet of non-combustible active components provides a porous structure capable of treating sidestream smoke. The treatment material, as used in combination with a cigarette, provides a low sidestream smoke emitting cigarette unit. The material has a porosity which encourages a conventional free-burn rate of a conventional cigarette. The material may comprise a sorbent capable of sorbing components of the sidestream smoke, and an oxygen storage component which releases oxygen at free-burn rate temperatures to ensure that conventional free-burn rate is maintained and to enhance the oxidation treatment of the adsorbed non-aqueous components. Preferably, an oxidation catalyst is included in the material and most desirably the oxygen storage component may also function as the oxidation catalyst. Particularly preferred materials which perform the dual function are oxides of cerium.

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a novel cigarette packaging system for &ldquo;making your own&rdquo; smokeable cigarettes. The kit is easily opened and allows a smoker to assemble a smokeable cigarette quickly without requiring great effort. The kit is inexpensive, convenient to use and also convenient to carry and store as its compact size is such that it fits in a person's hand, a shirt or coat pocket as well as in a ladies bag or purse. The kit is also advantageous because it is less expensive than tailor made cigarettes, yet is not that much wider than a standard, typical package of cigarettes. The construction of the kit, is such that it keeps the unsmokeable tobacco elements in a separate compartment which serves to help maintain the freshness of the tobacco.

A smoker's accessory for filtering cigarette smoke includes an exhaust fan, a smoke filter cartridge having a cigarette tube with an open end through which the burning end of the cigarette is placed, a porous tubular filter element at an end of the cigarette tube, a fresh air inlet and a temperature sensor adjacent the cigarette tube. The temperature sensor activates a signal upon detection of a burning cigarette in the cigarette tube.

Significant decreases in sidestream smoke production, approximately 30 to 70%, are obtained when compared to a tobacco filler rod wrapped in a conventional cigarette paper by double-wrapping the filler rod, first with a relatively non-porous paper having a Coresta porosity of about 1 to about 10% and then with a conventional cigarette paper.

A novel reconstituted tobacco sheet material is provided which is useful in providing a novel smoking product which has a smoking quality closely approximating that of cigarettes having conventional paper wrappers. The reconstituted tobacco sheet is prepared by a paper-making process in which the water-soluble material extracted in the paper-making process is not added back to the sheet, or if added back, to an extent of no more than 20 wt % of the reconstituted tobacco sheet. In the novel smoking product, a tobacco filler rod is enclosed within an outer wrapper, which usually comprises an inner binder layer and an outer wrapper layer, one or both formed of reconstituted tobacco sheet material. When the tobacco filler rod is double-wrapped, the novel smoking product also exhibits a significant reduction in sidestream smoking production in comparison to a conventionally-wrapped cigarette. The reconstituted tobacco sheet material has a porosity of at least about 50 Coresta units and contains about 0 to about 20 wt % of conventional chalk-type fillers.

A cigarette smoke filter is provided for use in a smoker's accessory for filtering cigarette smoke, the filter comprises: a tubular filter normally of micro-fibres for removing particulate material from cigarette smoke and optionally an outer filter layer of activated carbon material or the like for adsorbing gaseous components from the cigarette smoke. The efficiencies of the tubular filters is such to remove substantially all of the particulate and gaseous components from the cigarette smoke so that the filtered smoke stream can be discharged into the surroundings free of any cigarette smoke smell.
