The disclosure provides a functionalized polymer for use in coating compositions and a method for making the functionalized polymer. In some embodiments, the functionalized polymer is a water-dispersible polymer, more preferably a water-dispersible polyester polymer, having one or more side groups including one or more salt groups. Packaging containers (e.g., food or beverage cans) comprising the functionalized polymer and methods of making such containers are also provided.

Methods and materials for the functionalization of polymers and coatings including functionalized polymer

A polymer is provided that preferably includes at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group. In one embodiment, the polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. In one embodiment, the polymer has at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group that is at least bicyclic.

A method for making a coating composition by mixing one or more latex polymers and an aliphatic epoxy resin system having an epoxy equivalent weight less than 1000 and being distinct from the one or more latex polymers to provide an aqueous first component, and providing a second component having reactive groups that can react with the one or more epoxy resins. A mixture of the first and second components provides a film-forming curable coating composition that may be used on substrates including cement, cement fiberboard, wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, glass and composites.

A coated article which includes a cement fiberboard substrate and a radiation-curable coating system applied to the substrate. The coating system includes one or more olefinic compounds and one or more PVC dispersion resins, and may be provided in the form of one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers.

Medium and high molecular weight polyester polymers are prepared in syrup form from an ester oligomer. The oligomer is converted to the polymer by polycondensation at elevated pressure and elevated temperature in a nonreactive carrier capable of forming an azeotrope with water. The ester oligomerization or polycondensation reactions desirably are monitored using a non-viscometric technique. The process has a rapid cycle time. The syrup contains the polymer and nonreactive carrier, and may more conveniently be used to make initially non-solid products such as polyester coatings than is the case when employing pelletized solid polyester resins.

A method for coloring powders is provided that includes mixing a base powder and non-incorporated pigments. A colored powder composition having a base powder particle and at least a partial shell of non-incorporated pigments about the base powder particle is also provided. A polymer useful in coating compositions is described. The polymer is preferably an unsaturated polyurethane polymer, which preferably has an iodine value of at least 10. The polymer may be combined with one or more liquid carriers to form a liquid coating composition useful in coating a variety of substrates, including planar metal substrates.

The coating composition preferably includes an unsaturated polymer such as, for example, an unsaturated polyester polymer; an ether component including one or more ether groups; and an optional liquid carrier. In preferred embodiments, the unsaturated polymer preferably has an iodine value of at least 10. The coating composition is useful in coating a variety of substrates, including planar metal substrates.

The present invention relates to a binder useful in coating end uses. The binder preferably includes an aqueous polymer dispersion and a vinyl polymer. The binder is useful in packaging coatings, including coatings for use on food or beverage cans, or a portion thereof.
