In at least one embodiment, a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphone assembly is provided. The assembly includes an enclosure, a MEMS transducer, and a plurality of substrate layers. The single MEMS transducer is positioned within the enclosure. The plurality of substrate layers support the single MEMS transducer. The plurality of substrate layers define a first transmission mechanism to enable a first side of the single MEMS transducer to receive an audio input signal and a second transmission mechanism to enable a second side of the single MEMS transducer to receive the audio input signal.

Gradient micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphone

An earphone device capable of achieving sound bandwidths beyond the 150-7000 Hz wideband range, and configured for supra-concha or supra-aural placement. The earphone comprises at least two frequency range receivers positioned within a housing. In at least one embodiment, the earphone is capable of achieving a super-wideband range by physically combining a low frequency range receiver and a high frequency range receiver in a space-efficient and acoustically advantageous manner.

The microphone system for communication devices that comprises an electric circuit comprising two microphone elements connected to a signal flow processor. This processor uses a digital signal processor or comparable analog circuitry to provide a particular electrical time delay (&#x3c4;) to one of the microphone elements (nearest the ear or loudspeaker) and a compatible amplitude gain (Gm) to the other microphone element (nearest the user's mouth) in order to substantially reduce the external acoustic coupling and echo of communication devices in the receive and doubletalk state. Further, this processing system allows the microphone system to reduce the pickup of ambient noise in the send and idle state, while still being sensitive to the user's speech.

A telephone handset that includes both a speaker and a secondary flux coil is provided. The secondary flux coil provides improved inductive coupling between the handset and a hearing aid. Due to the wiring configuration of the handset, the speaker and the secondary flux coil can be independently filtered, thus providing means for independently optimizing the performance of both the speaker and the secondary flux coil. Suitable filters include both passive circuits and digital signal processors.

The at least two compliant members mechanically support the isolation member and isolate the isolation member from vibrations. A moving-armature transducer assembly suitable for use as an alerter in a portable telephone. The assembly includes a transducer housed in an enclosure including first and second acoustical chambers. A first sound emitted from a front hole on a front side of the transducer is propagated through the first acoustical chamber and emitted from a first port of the assembly. A second sound emitted from a rear hole on a rear side of the transducer is phase-shifted by the second acoustical chamber acting in combination with a second port or ports on the assembly to have a phase coinciding with the phase of the first sound. The second sound then combines with the first sound, reinforcing the first sound and producing a combined sound having an increased level and bandwidth.

Methods and apparatus for controlling the output of moving armature transducers

Active noise control for use by individuals using magnetically coupled hearing aids is realized by generating a true representation of the handset input signal, which is employed to drive a separate external field coil. The external field coil is positioned between the handset receiver and the handset acoustic output ports so that it is in close proximity to a user's ear cavity and, hence, to the magnetically coupled hearing aid. Also, in some embodiments of the invention, a magnetic shield is employed between the handset receiver and the external field coil to inhibit the magnetic leakage field from the receiver element from mixing with the magnetic field from the external field coil.

A loudspeaker system which can be utilized with laptop PCs employs a loudspeaker enclosure having a unique shape which can easily be mounted to the back of a display of the laptop PC and also be easily removed for storing and/or transporting. Additionally, the enclosures of the loudspeaker system have been designed to allow the physical coupling of them together into a compact package so that they can be easily stored and/or transported, for example, in a briefcase for use during transit or at a remote location. This coupling of the loudspeaker enclosures is realized by employing a loudspeaker enclosure which is in the form of an 'L-shape'. Consequently, the loudspeaker enclosures can be placed upon each other and locked into place forming a relatively small compact package.

An improved Broadside SOG microphone assembly is realized by employing a microphone assembly having at least three ports arranged in a non-colinear fashion with the at least three ports defining and being in a 'gradient' plane and with both outer adjacent differential pair of ports aligned in a direction substantially toward a prospective talker's lips. Thus, the inner port(s) is always closer to the prospective talker's lips. Each outer differential pair of ports forms a dipole which yields a high spatial gradient and, hence, higher speech sensitivity since they are pointed substantially toward the prospective talker's lips. Just as important, as the prospective talker's lip position relative to the microphone varies, this alignment of each outer differential pair of ports will result in the least change in the dipole sensitivity and, therefore, the lowest Broadside SOG microphone position sensitivity. Another advantage of this arrangement is that it similarly has significantly reduced position sensitivity with angular departure from the nominal Broadside prospective talker's lip position, owing again to the orientation of the prospective talker's lips. In a preferred embodiment, a single FOG microphone element is employed which accepts four distinct acoustic signals from acoustic transmission lines from four distinct ports arranged in a non-colinear fashion. The four ports define and are in a 'gradient' plane with both outer adjacent differential pair of ports aligned in a direction substantially toward the prospective talker's lips. Thus, the inner ports are always closer to the prospective talker's lips. Each outer differential pair of ports forms a dipole which yields a high spatial gradient and, hence, higher speech sensitivity since they are pointed in a direction substantially toward the prospective talker's lips. To this end, the outer ports are plus (+) ports and the inner ports are minus (-) ports, or vice versa, referring to each side of the FOG element's diaphragm.

A compact telephone handset, when not in use, is shorter in length than the distance between a user's ear and mouth and has an extendable boom for lengthening the telephone to a length equal to the distance between the user's ear and mouth. The handset has a receiver device and a microphone device with one of the devices being located on the main body of the handset and the other device being located on a slidable boom which is extendable and retractable relative to the main body.

In accordance with the invention, a new type of microphone utilizes a magnetoresistive sensing element. Specifically, acoustical energy causes vibrations between a magnetoresistive element and a magnet, producing a variation in the resistance which can be used to convert an acoustical signal into a corresponding electrical signal.

Telephone handset

Coupling apparatus for a telephone handset comprises a handset-coupling cradle having a dome at one end thereof for locating the earpiece (receiver) of the handset, and sound ports at the other end of the cradle in the region where the mouthpiece (microphone) of the handset resides. The handset-coupling cradle is shaped to accommodate a variety of different handset styles. An inductive sensor is mounted within the dome and it responds to electromagnetic fields generated by the handset receiver. Such a sensor eliminates the need to closely couple the receiver to the apparatus. A low acoustic impedance loudspeaker is mounted beneath the sound ports for acoustically coupling signals to the handset's microphone. Such a loudspeaker eliminates the need to closely couple the microphone to the apparatus.
