Polymer compositions, methods of making the same, and articles prepared from the same

Shear-thinning ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin and ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin/diene monomer interpolymers that do not include a traditional branch-inducing monomer such as norbornadiene are prepared at an elevated temperature in an atmosphere that has little or no hydrogen using a constrained geometry complex catalyst and an activating cocatalyst.

Shear thinning ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin interpolymers and their preparation

The invention provides blends comprising an ethylene copolymer formed from ethylene with at least one comonomer selected from (a) the group comprising compounds represented by the formula HC&#x2550;CHR wherein R represents a C-Clinear, branched or cyclic alkyl group or a C-Caryl group, and (b) a C-Clinear, branched or cyclic diene. Each copolymer has a specific density, a specific molecular weight distribution, and a specific comonomer content distribution characteristic.

Ethylene copolymers and blend compositions

Blend compositions containing a novel homopolymer, the use of which allows the incorporation of more comonomer in the additional components of the blend (for the same overall density) resulting in increased tie molecule formation and improvement in properties such as ESCR, toughness and impact strength are disclosed. The homopolymers are important for applications where a high density is needed to ensure certain mechanical properties like abrasion resistance, indentation resistance, pressure resistance, topload resistance, modulus of elasticity, or morphology (for the chlorination of PE to CPE) and additional advantages such as melt processability. The blend can be obtained by dry or melt mixing the already produced components, or through in-situ production by in parallel and/or in series arranged reactors. These resins can be used in applications such as films, blow molded, injection molded, and rotomolded articles, fibers, and cable and wire coatings and jacketings and, various forms of pipe.

High density ethylene homopolymers and blend compositions

A process for the preparation of blends including an ethylene copolymer by copolymerizing ethylene and at least one comonomer selected from a compound represented by the formula HC&#x2550;CHR wherein R is an alkyl group or an aryl group, and a diene, in the presence of a solid catalyst system comprising a support, a transition metal compound and an activator capable of converting the transition metal compound into a catalytically active transition metal complex.

Process for preparing copolymers and blend compositions containing the same

Shear thinning ethylene/&agr;-olefin interpolymers and their preparation

Rheology-modified thermoplastic elastomer compositions are prepared by peroxide modification of a melt blend of an ethylene/&agr;-olefin polymer or a diene-modified ethylene/&agr;-olefin polymer and a high melting polymer such as polypropylene or a propylene/&agr;-olefin copolymer. The resulting compositions have an elastomeric phase, a non-elastomeric phase and certain physical properties that exceed those of a like composition that is not rheology-modified. The compositions can be used to make a variety of articles of manufacture via conventional procedures.

Rheology-modified thermoplastic elastomer compositions and articles fabricated therefrom

Melt processible thermoplastic compositions and method for making them are described, these compositions comprising a thermoplastic polymer resin matrix selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polyurethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, styrenics, engineering thermoplastics, and polyolefins, at least about 25 percent (by weight based on the total composition) of an elastomeric impact modifier dispersed as discrete particles in the thermoplastic matrix (a); and at least about 10 percent (by weight based on the total composition) of at least one homogeneous linear or substantially linear ethylene polymer dispersed as discrete particles in at least the impact modifier (b), the ethylene polymer having a molecular weight distribution less than 3.5 and a density of at least 0.04 g/cm.sup.3 higher than the density of the impact modifier component (b), wherein the elastic modulus of the thermoplastic component (a) is at least 200 times greater than the elastic modulus of the impact modifier component (b). These thermoplastic compositions have improved processability. Processes for fabricating articles from them are described. The articles made with these compositions have improved properties such as low temperature impact strength, improved percent elongation to break, greater stiffness, and improved weld line strength, making them useful for applications requiring both strength and flexibility in low temperature environments, such as automotive components and facia.

Impact-modified thermoplastic polyolefins and articles fabricated

Melt processible thermoplastic compositions and method for making them are described, these compositions comprising a) a polypropylene matrix, b) at least about 25 percent (by weight based on the total composition) of an elastomeric impact modifier dispersed as discrete particles in the polypropylene matrix (a); and c) at least about 10 percent (by weight based on the total composition) of at least one homogeneous linear or substantially linear ethylene polymer dispersed as discrete particles in at least the impact modifier (b), the ethylene polymer having a molecular weight distribution less than 3.5 and a density of at least 0.04 g/cm.sup.3 higher than the density of the impact modifier component (b), wherein the elastic modulus of the polypropylene (a) is at least 200 times greater than the elastic modulus of the impact modifier component (b). These thermoplastic compositions have improved processability. Processes for fabricating articles from them are described. The articles made with these compositions have improved properties such as low temperature impact strength, improved percent elongation to break, greater stiffness, and improved weld line strength, making them useful for applications requiring both strength and flexibility in low temperature environments, such as automotive components and facia.

Olefins are polymerized under solution polymerization conditions in the presence of the solid catalytic product resulting from removing the liquid components from the product resulting from admixing in an inert diluent and in an atmosphere which excludes moisture and oxygen (A) at least one hydrocarbon soluble organomagnesium compound; (B) at least one organic hydroxyl-containing compound; (C) at least one reducing halide source; (D) at least one transition metal (Tm) alkoxide.

Catalyst and process for polymerizing olefins

Olefins are polymerized under slurry conditions in the presence of a cocatalyst and a catalyst prepared by a method wherein a mixture (A) containing the product resulting from mixing in an inert hydrocarbon diluent (1) a hydrocarbon soluble magnesium alkyl compound, (2) an aliphatic alcohol and (3) a titanium compound is reacted with (B) a reducing halide source. Components (A) and (B) are mixed at a constant initial temperature. When the concentration of components (A) and (B) in said hydrocarbon solvent is relatively low and when the ratio of the number of moles of aliphatic alcohol:total number of hydrocarbyl groups attached to the metal atom in component (1) is relatively low, the resultant polymer has a relatively small average particle size and a relatively narrow particle size distribution.

Process for polymerizing olefins

Halogenated polyethylene resins and halogenated ethylene polymer resins having a reduced tendency to 'block' are provided. The halogenated resins are prepared respectively from polyethylene and ethylene polymer starting materials which have a weight-based median particle size of from about 120 to about 600 microns and a weight-based particle size distribution such that more than 60 percent of the particles have a particle size of from about 130 to about 850 microns. The halogenated resins also have a weight-based median particle size of from about 200 to about 900 microns. The halogenated polyethylene resins have a chemically combined halogen content of from about 26 to about 42 weight percent whereas the halogenated ethylene polymer resins have a chemically combined halogen content of from about 15 to about 28 weight percent. The halogenated ethylene polymer resins are prepared from ethylene polymer starting materials which have polymerized therein up to five weight percent of 1-olefin monomer copolymerizable with ethylene.

Halogenated ethylene polymers with improved resistance to agglomeration

A method for preparing Ziegler catalysts is disclosed wherein a mixture (A) containing the product resulting from mixing in an inert hydrocarbon diluent (1) a hydrocarbon soluble magnesium alkyl compound in said hydrocarbon solvent, (2) an aliphatic alcohol or carbon dioxide and (3) a titanium compound is reacted with (B) a reducing halide source in said hydrocarbon solvent. Components (A) and (B) are mixed at a constant initial temperature. When the magnesium concentration in component (A) and the metal concentration in component (B) are relatively low, the resultant polymer has a relatively narrow particle size distribution whereas when said concentration is relatively high, the resultant polymer has a relatively broad particle size distribution. When the ratio of the number of moles of aliphatic alcohol:total number of hydrocarbyl groups attached to the metal atom in component (1) is relatively low, the resultant polymer has a relatively small average particle size. When the ratio of the number of moles of aliphatic alcohol:total number of hydrocarbyl groups attached to the metal atom in component (1) is relatively high, the resultant polymer has a relatively large average particle size.

Method for preparing transition metal component of Ziegler-Natta

Olefins or mixtures thereof are polymerized in the presence of the product resulting from heating in an inert hydrocarbon diluent a mixture of (A) an organomagnesium material, (B) essentially anhydrous carbon dioxide, (C) a reducing halide source and (D) a transition metal compound.
