The present invention provides a receptacle () for a therapeutic fluid susceptible to deterioration on exposure to a gas such as oxygen or carbon dioxide. The receptacle () has walls of sheet material each including at least one layer forming a barrier essentially impermeable to such gas, and a seal sealing the walls together in a region thereof. A transfer tube () is sealed in the seal having a proximal end in the receptacle (), a distal end accessible from outside the receptacle (), a flow passage () extending between said proximal and distal ends, and a closure () blocking flow through the flow passage () adapted to be pierced by a tubular needle for transfer of therapeutic through the needle. The transfer tube () and closure () are essentially impermeable to said gas.

Multiple layer polymeric structure

The present invention provides a tubing assembly having a sidewall having a first layer. The first layer is fabricated from a first polymer blend comprising a first component of a material not thermally responsive to laser beam and selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, ethylene and lower alkyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene and lower alkyl substituted alkyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, polybutadienes, polyesters, polyamides, and styrene and hydrocarbon copolymers. A second component of the blend is a laser responsive material having low solubility in aqueous medium; and the blend being sufficiently thermally responsive to exposure to a laser beam having a wavelength within a range of wavelengths from about 700 nm to about 1500 nm to melt upon exposure to the laser beam for a short period of time. The assembly also has an end cap film covering the fluid outlet.

Laser weldable flexible medical tubings, films and assemblies thereof

In particular, polymeric compositions comprising a heat resistant polymer; a radio frequency ('RF') susceptible polymer; a compatibilizing polymer; the composition having physical properties within a range a&#x3c;40,000 psi; b&#x3e;=70%; c&#x3c;30%; d&#x3e;1.0; e&#x3c;0.1%; f&#x3c;0.1%; g&#x3e;=0.05; h&#x3c;=60%; i=0; wherein: a is the mechanical modulus of the composition measured according to ASTM D-882; b is the percent recovery in length of the composition after an initial 20% deformation; c is the optical haze of the composition being 9 mils in thickness according to ASTM D-1003; d is the loss tangent of the composition at 1 Hz measured at melt processing temperatures; e is the elemental halogen content by weight of the composition; f is the low molecular weight water soluble fraction of the composition; g is the dielectric loss between 1 and 60 MHz and over temperatures of 25 to 250&#xb0; C. of the composition; h sample creep measured at 121&#xb0; C. for a 1 inch strip of the composition under 27 psi loading; and, i indicates the composition exhibits no strain whitening after being strained at moderate speeds of about 20 inches (50 cm) per minute to about 100% elongation (twice the original length) and the presence of strain whitening (indicated by 1) or lack thereof (indicated by 0) is noted.

Polymeric compositions for medical packaging and devices

The present invention provides a non-PVC, non-DEHP material that can be used for medical grade tubing. Additionally, the present invention provides medical grade tubing made from such a material. To this end, the present invention provides a medical grade tubing comprising a multilayer coextruded structure including: a layer comprising a blend of polyurethane and polyester; and a layer comprising a blend chosen from the group consisting of: polypropylene, ethylenevinyl acetate, and polyurethane; polypropylene and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene; polypropylene, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, and ethylenevinyl acetate; polypropylene, ethylenevinyl acetate, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, and thermoplastic polyester elastomer; polypropylene, ethylenevinyl acetate, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, thermoplastic polyester elastomer, and polyurethane; polyester, thermoplastic polyester elastomer, and polyurethane; polyester and polyurethane; and polypropylene, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, and polyurethane.

Multilayer coextruded material for medical grade products and products made therefrom

The present invention provides a multiple layer thermoplastic structure of a (1) skin layer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc, and ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc blended with an ethylene and a-olefin copolymers having a density less than about 0.930 g/cc, the skin layer having a thickness of greater than about 3.0 mils; (2) a radio frequency susceptible layer adhered to the skin layer, the radio frequency susceptible layer having a dielectric loss greater than 0.05 at 1-60 MHz and at temperatures of ambient to 250&deg; C., the radio frequency susceptible layer having: (a) a first polyolefin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polypropylene copolymers, (b) a second polyolefin selected from the group consisting of ethylene copolymers, ultra-low density polyethylene, polybutene, and butene ethylene copolymers; (c) a radio frequency susceptible polymer selected from the group consisting of (i) ethylene copolymers having 50-85% ethylene content with comonomers selected from a first group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ester derivatives of acrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, ester derivatives of methacrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, vinyl acetate, and vinyl alcohol (ii) homopolymers and copolymers containing at least one segment of urethanes, esters, ureas, imides, sulfones, and amides, and (d) a compatibilizing agent of a styrene and hydrocarbon copolymer; wherein the structure when fabricated into a 50 ml container has a water vapor transmission rate of less than 8% by weight after the container has been autoclaved at 121&deg; C. for 20 minutes and stored for 90 days in an environmentally regulated compartment having 15% relative humidity at 40&deg; C.

A container is disclosed comprising a first sidewall having a first layer and a second layer. The second layer overlaps a portion of the first layer to define an overlap area. A sealing flange extends from the first layer outward of the overlap area. A second sidewall is connected to the first sidewall along the sealing flange to define an inner chamber therebetween. The second sidewall and the sealing flange define a first layered structure having a first number of layers along the sealing flange. The overlap area and the second sidewall define a second layered structure having a second number of layers. The second number of layers is greater than the first number of layers. The container is sealed by positioning peripheral edges of the first and second sidewalls into registration so that the overlap area is substantially centrally disposed over the second sidewall and applying sealing energy to the first number of layers to define a peripheral seam.
