An electrowetting element comprising a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. A support plate comprises a first layer comprising a migration pathway, the first layer comprising a first surface in contact with at least one of the first fluid or the second fluid. A substance is disposed within at least a portion of the migration pathway in the first layer. The substance is distinct from both the first fluid and the second fluid and is configured to reduce migration of at least a component of the first fluid or a component of the second fluid into the migration pathway in the first layer.

Systems and methods for improving a fluid contact layer in an electrowetting element

An electrowetting display comprises a support plate on which individual electrowetting pixels separated from one another by pixel walls are formed. The individual electrowetting pixels include an electrode layer on the support plate, a dielectric barrier layer on the electrode layer, a hydrophobic layer on the dielectric barrier layer, and quantum dots between the hydrophobic layer and the electrode layer. The quantum dots may utilize blue or white light illuminating the pixels to emit longer-wavelength colors such as red and green. Such a feature may enhance or replace functionality of color filters.

An electrowetting device includes an electrowetting element having a first fluid; a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid, a configuration of the first and second fluids being controllable with an applied voltage; and at least one electrode for providing the applied voltage. The electrowetting device includes a plurality of electrical elements for providing the applied voltage, which include a first electrical element and a second electrical element. A portion of the first electrical element overlaps a portion of the second electrical element. The electrowetting device includes a dielectric layer between the portions of the first and second electrical elements, the dielectric layer formed at least partly of a dielectric material having a dielectric constant less than 3.9.

An electrowetting device comprises a first support plate and a second support plate, pixel regions between the first support plate and the second support plate, pixel walls on the first support plate that delineate the pixel regions from one another, and an electrolyte solution between the first support plate and the second support plate. The electrolyte solution includes an adsorbent.

The layer is formed at least partly of a material having a backbone which is substantially apolar and at least one chain pendant from the backbone and terminating with a substantially polar group.
