Various embodiments are generally directed to authenticating a user for non-payment purposes utilizing a payment protocol, a computer device and a contactless card. The payment protocol may be consistent with an EMV standard. An application may determine that authorization or verification of a user may be required to access non-payment features of another application associated with the user and the computer device. The application may then receive and/or facilitate transmission of encrypted data from a communications interface of a contactless card associated with an account and utilizing either an offline or online technique to do so. The offline or online technique may involve one or more operations that can verify the identity of the user and/or otherwise authorize the user to have access to various aspects of the other application.

Systems and methods for providing online and hybridcard interactions

A method includes: receiving, by a server from a user device of a user, a message indicating a forgotten password of an online account of the user; verifying, by the server, at least one contactless card associated with the online account; transmitting, by the server to the user device, a first notification requesting the user to tap the at least one contactless card to the user device; receiving, by the server from the user device, a generated cryptogram, wherein the generated cryptogram is generated by the at least one contactless card; comparing, by the server, the generated cryptogram with a stored cryptogram associated with the at least one contactless card; and in response to a determination that the generated cryptogram matches the stored cryptogram, transmitting, by the server to the user device, a second notification indicating the user is authenticated to perform an action related to the forgotten password.

Techniques to control applets for contactless cards

A password-less authentication system and method include registering a contactless card of a client with an application service and binding the contactless card to one or more client devices. The contactless card advantageously stores a username and a dynamic password. Accesses by the client to the application service may be made using any client device, and authentication of the accesses may be performed by any client device that includes a contactless card interface and can retrieve the username and dynamic password pair from the contactless card. By storing the username on the card, rather than requiring user input, application security improved because access to and knowledge of login credentials is limited. In addition, the use of a dynamic password reduces the potential of malicious access.

A technique for generating a diversified encryption key for a contactless legacy magnetic stripe card is disclosed. The diversified key can be generated using a master key, a key diversification value and an encryption algorithm. In one example embodiment, the key diversification value can be provided by the user as a fingerprint, numeric code or photo. The user can provide the key diversification value to the card or a cellphone. The card can generate the diversified key using the user provided key diversification value. The card or the cellphone can transmit the user provided diversification value to the server and the server can regenerate the diversified key using the user provided diversification value.
