An air intake system includes a ram air cooling circuit, an air compression system, and an energy recovery system. The cooling circuit includes an inlet, an outlet, and a heat exchanger. The outlet is downstream from the inlet. The heat exchanger is between the inlet and the outlet. The compression system includes an inlet duct, a rotary machine, and an outlet duct. The inlet duct is downstream from the cooling circuit inlet. The rotary machine includes a shaft mechanically connecting a first compressor section, a second compressor section, a motor section, and a turbine section. The first compressor section is downstream from the inlet duct and upstream from the heat exchanger. The second compressor section is downstream from the heat exchanger. The outlet duct is downstream from the second compressor section. The energy recovery system includes a compartment downstream from the outlet duct and upstream from the turbine section.

An air quality sensor includes a detector element array, a processor operatively connected to the detector element array, and a memory. The memory is disposed in communication with the processor and has instructions recorded on the memory that, when read by the processor, cause the processor to execute certain operations including measuring electrical resistance of one of more detector element of the detector element array. A difference is calculated between the measured resistance and a reference resistance, and a determination is made of presence or absence of a contaminant in air communicated to the detector element array from an atmosphere of an aircraft cabin based on the difference between the measured resistance and the reference resistance. An environmental control system that includes a first environmental control system pack, a first recirculation fan assembly, and a cabin air sensor unit. The first environmental control system pack is arranged to provide conditioned air to an aircraft cabin. The first recirculation fan assembly is arranged to recirculate a first cabin air fluid flow back to the aircraft cabin. The cabin air sensor unit is arranged to provide a first air quality signal indicative of an air quality of the first cabin air fluid flow to a controller.

A thermal management system for one or more aircraft components includes a bleed airflow source at a gas turbine engine of the aircraft, one or more turbines configured to expand the bleed airflow, thus lowering a temperature of the bleed airflow, the bleed airflow driving rotation of the one or more turbines. The one or more heat exchangers are configured to exchange thermal energy between the bleed airflow and a thermal load. One or more electrical generators are operably connected to the one or more turbines. A system for processing recirculation air recovered from an aircraft cabin includes a mixing chamber and a carbon dioxide removal system. The carbon dioxide removal system has an inlet for recovered recirculation air from the aircraft cabin, an outlet to the mixing chamber; at least two assemblies of carbon dioxide sorbent that are thermally linked, a COoutlet valve; and a controller for managing desorption of carbon dioxide from the sorbent depending on aircraft status. The mixing chamber has an inlet from the carbon dioxide removal system, an inlet from an environmental control system, and an outlet connected to the aircraft cabin.

A system includes a portable air sensing device and an electronic interface device. The portable air sensing device is configured to sense a concentration of component gas in surrounding air and wirelessly transmit the sensed concentration. The electronic interface device is positioned within a cockpit of an aircraft and is communicatively coupled with the portable air sensing device. The electronic interface device is configured to receive the wirelessly transmitted concentration from the portable air sensing device, and generate, for display, an indication of the received concentration in relation to a defined threshold maximum concentration of the component gas.

A water extractor includes an outer duct with an inlet and an outlet, and an inner duct with an inlet and an outlet. The inner duct is positioned in the outer duct. The water extractor further includes a gap between the inner duct and the outer duct. The gap is tapered between a first position and a second position.
