Various embodiments are described herein for a universal television receiver that is capable of processing television channel signals, that are transmitted according to a variety of broadcast standards, to provide video and audio information for a desired television channel signal. The processing includes producing a coarse channel signal that includes a desired television channel signal and then applying resampling techniques to adjust a normalized bandwidth of the desired television channel signal to generally correspond to the normalized passband of a main filter that is used for each of the broadcast standards.

The filter selector selects a filter in accordance with the estimated amount of motion. The filter applies a first weighting factor to a plurality of current field pixels and a second weighting factor to a plurality of previous field pixels for creating the target pixel.

A method for interpolating a target pixel from a plurality of source pixels in a high contrast image. The method comprises the following steps. A window of the plurality of source pixels is examined and compared with a plurality of predefined conditions for determining if a structure of significance is present within the window. A filter configuration is selected from a plurality of filter configurations in accordance with results of the comparison. The selected filter is applied to the source pixels for interpolating the target pixel. If the structure of significance is detected in the window, the selected filter best preserves the structure.

A system and method are provided for calculating a target pixel for scaling an image comprising a plurality of source pixels. A contour is determined in the image using at least one of a first set of predetermined parameters. A filter tap configuration is adaptively selected from a predefined set of filter tap configurations in accordance with the determined contour. The predefined set of configurations includes a plurality of non-linear filter tap configurations. The target pixel is calculated by selectively convolving ones of the plurality of source pixels along a locus of the selected filter tap configuration with a weighting factor, and combining the convolved pixels.

A method of de-interlacing used to convert an interlaced video signal to a progressively scanned format utilizing vertical temporal filtering to generate the missing lines, utilizing appropriate filter coefficients to give a desired vertical frequency response, and filter utilizing coefficients such that the total combined contribution from all fields is unity while the total contribution from each individual field is chosen so as to boost higher temporal frequencies which has the perceived effect of increasing the sharpness of moving edges. Furthermore, in order to avoid certain unwanted artifacts, the lines of the current field are modified using a vertical temporal filter with similar temporal boosting properties to that which was used to generate the missing lines.

Method and apparatus for video line multiplication with enhanced sharpness

A method of generating an upsampled target pixel positioned between two lines of input source data includes the step of comparing pixels of different lines of the source data in a region surrounding the upsampled target pixel to be generated in at least two different directions. An interpolation direction based on the comparison is selected and interpolations between selected pixels of the source data in the determined interpolation direction are carried out to compute intermediate pixels on a line segment passing through the upsampled target pixel. An interpolation between the intermediate pixels is carried out to generate the upsampled target pixel. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Source data interpolation method and apparatus

A method and apparatus are provided for converting interlaced video fields of arbitrary size to progressive scan format video frames of arbitrary size. The method and apparatus of the invention provide consistent conversion quality even while output video dimensions are scaled in real-time. According to a first aspect of the invention the space between output lines is calculated with respect to the input fields. According to a second aspect, the output line spacing information is used to calculate the final line positions in a progressive scan output frame.
