The self-contouring plate system for bone fractures with anti-rotation stop allows a surgeon to bridge a bone fracture, primarily in bones of complex shape where the use of plates or screws is difficult. The self-contouring plate is formed from a series of similar or identical rigid elements, the elements able to bend and rotate with respect to each other. This flexibility is initially helpful as the surgeon contours the device to the shape of the bone. When the desired shape is reached, the elements are locked into place. The length of device is adjusted by adding or removing elements, much like a necklace. Each element of the self-contouring plate includes a ball that extends away from a body, a cavity for receiving the ball of the neighboring plate, and a screw to compress the ball within the cavity.

The spinal stabilization device is implanted using a surgical procedure referred to as an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (AILF). The body of the device includes upper and lower surfaces that are placed in direct contact with the adjacent vertebrae. After placement of the device between the vertebrae, a threaded member is rotated to cause the anchoring element to push into the body of the device, causing the extension of tangs through the upper and lower surfaces and into the adjacent vertebrae of the patient. Movement of the anchoring element with respect to the body is caused by rotation of a threaded actuator. The threaded actuator is a permanent element of the spinal stabilization device, rather than being integrated into a temporary tool.

The bone screw with internal extendable is a bone screw with an internal, extendable tang. The tang&#x2014;part of a tang system&#x2014;is concealed within the body of the screw until after placement. After the screw is threaded into the bone, the internal tang system is pushed out of the bone screw body, forcing one or more tangs to extend out of the body and into the bone. A driver allows the user to control the different steps of insertion, including converting rotational motion of a knob into linear motion of a rod, the rod moving through the screw body to force the tang to exit the bone screw body. The one or more tangs preferably exit the bone screw body at a tang exit portal formed by one or more tang exit guide surfaces.
