Optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator-based acoustic sensors, imaging systems that make use of the acoustic sensors, and methods of detecting ultrasound waves using the acoustic sensors are disclosed.

Ultrasound sensing and imaging based on whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators

A displacement sensor including an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator and a package encasing at least a portion of the WGM microresonator, the package comprising polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The WGM microresonator can be configured as a sensor and used in a displacement detection system that can detect displacement with high quality. Artificial intelligence can be implemented in the displacement detection system for improved sensing of different variables and/or pinpointing the location of perturbations.

A method of transmitting at least one optical signal through an add-drop filter includes directing the at least one optical signal into a first tapered optical fiber of the add-drop filter. The add-drop filter includes an active resonator side-coupled between the first tapered optical fiber and a second tapered optical fiber, and the active resonator is doped with at least one rare earth ion. A tuned optical gain is produced by delivering a tuned amount of pump laser energy to the at least one rare earth ion at a sub-lasing level, the tuned optical gain configured to compensate an intrinsic loss of the active resonator.

A microprobe is provided that includes a microsphere optical resonator operatively coupled to a nanoscatterer. The microsphere optical resonator includes a back surface and a front surface opposite the front surface. The front surface is configured to receive a focused laser beam, and the nanoscatterer is positioned adjacent to the back surface.

An a system and method for chaos transfer between multiple detuned signals in a resonator mediated by chaotic mechanical oscillation induced stochastic resonance where at least one signal is strong and where at least one signal is weak and where the strong and weak signal follow the same route, from periodic oscillations to quasi-periodic and finally to chaotic oscillations, as the strong signal power is increased.

Opto-mechanical system and method having chaos induced stochastic resonance and opto-mechanically mediated chaos transfer

An integrated circuit is disclosed. The integrated circuit includes a first resonator, a second resonator, and a coupling element. The first resonator has a first terminal and a second terminal, where the first resonator comprises a gain resistor, a gain capacitor, and a gain inductor in parallel and electrically coupling the first terminal with the second terminal. The second resonator has a third terminal and a fourth terminal, where the second resonator includes a loss resistor, a loss capacitor, and a loss inductor in parallel and electrically coupling the third terminal with the fourth terminal. The coupling element selectively couples the first terminal of the first resonator with the third terminal of the second resonator.

Fully integrated parity-time symmetric electronics

A system and method for engineering loss in a physical system by steering parameters of the physical system to the vicinity of an exceptional point is disclosed. In the vicinity of an exceptional point, localization of the fields helps to enhance any linear or nonlinear processes. As examples loss-induced transparency in the intracavity field intensities of coupled resonators, loss-induced suppression and enhancement of thermal nonlinearity in coupled resonators and loss-induced suppression and revival of Raman lasing in whispering-gallery-microcavities are demonstrated.

An add-drop filter for transmitting at least one signal is provided. The add-drop filter includes at least two optical waveguides capable of carrying the at least one signal, and at least one active resonator coupled between the optical waveguides, wherein the at least one active resonator provides gain that counteracts losses for the at least one signal.

Embodiments of the invention provide Raman spectroscopy methods and devices that exploit high quality factor (Q) resonators to enhance Raman signal by several orders of magnitude over the signal typically expected for Raman methods. Embodiments typically include one or more resonators, typically microtoroid microresonators. Embodiments also take advantage of Rayleigh scattering using these microresonators. Embodiments may be particularly useful for non-labeled nanoparticle sensing.

A method and system for optical systems based on parity-time symmetry and its breaking, and for nonreciprocal light transmission in a parity-time symmetric micro-resonator system are provided. The system includes an optical assembly that includes a first dissipative optical system and a second optical system coupled in energy transfer communication with the first optical system. The second optical system is configured to receive a continuous flow of energy from an external source and to transfer energy to the first optical system through the couple wherein the energy transferred to the first optical system from the second optical system is approximately equal to the energy dissipated in the first optical system, where the energy transferred to the first optical system from the second optical system is selectable using at least one of an amount of couple between the first optical system and the second optical system and a gain of the second optical system.

Method and system for parity-time symmetric optics and nonreciprocal light transmission

A particle detection system is provided. The particle detection system includes at least one tapered optical fiber, a light source configured to transmit light through the at least one tapered optical fiber, a photodetector configured to measure a characteristic of the light being transmitted through the at least one optical fiber, and a computing device coupled to the photodetector and configured to determine whether a nanoparticle is present within an evanescent field of the at least one tapered optical fiber based on the measured light characteristic.

Systems and methods for particle detection

Detection of individual objects using a light source and a whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator. Light from the whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator is analyzed. The presence of an object is determined based on mode splitting associated with the light received by the photodetector. For example, the presence of the object may be determined based on the distance between two whispering gallery modes and/or the linewidths of the two modes in a transmission spectrum. Alternatively, the presence of the object may be determined based on a beat frequency that is determined based on a heterodyne beat signal produced by combining split laser modes in the received light from a WGM microcavity laser.
