The present invention generally relates to electrodes for use in lead-acid battery systems, batteries and electrical storage devices thereof, and methods for producing the electrodes, batteries and electrical storage devices. In particular, the electrodes comprise active battery material for a lead-acid storage battery, wherein the surface of the electrode is provided with a coating layer comprising a carbon mixture containing composite carbon particles, wherein each of the composite carbon particles comprises a particle of a first capacitor carbon material combined with particles of a second electrically conductive carbon material. The electrical storage devices and batteries comprising the electrodes are, for example, particularly suitable for use in hybrid electric vehicles requiring a repeated rapid charge/discharge operation in the PSOC, idling-stop system vehicles, and in industrial applications such as wind power generation, and photovoltaic power generation.

There is provided a method for producing a hybrid negative plate for a lead-acid storage battery which is improved in the production working efficiency and the productivity and enhances the quick charge and discharge characteristics and the discharge characteristics at a low temperature under PSOC of a lead-acid storage battery. A carbon mixture sheet produced by such a way that a carbon mixture prepared by mixing two types of carbon materials consisting of a first carbon material having electroconductivity and a second carbon material having capacitor capacitance and/or pseudocapacitor capacitance, and at least a binder, is adhered by pressure to the surface of a negative plate in a wet state, so that a hybrid negative plate is produced. The lead-acid storage battery provided with the hybrid negative plate is improved in the discharge characteristics.

[Problem] To provide a hybrid negative plate for a lead-acid storage battery, that inhibits decrease in hydrogen gas evolution potential and improves rapid discharge cycle characteristics in PSOC. [Means for Resolution] In a hybrid negative plate for a lead-acid storage battery, comprising a negative electrode active material-filled plate having formed on the surface thereof a coating layer of a carbon mixture comprising a carbon material for ensuring conductivity, activated carbon for ensuring capacitor capacity and/or pseudocapacitor capacity, and at least a binder, activated carbon modified with a functional group is used as the activated carbon. Preferably, activated carbon modified with an acidic surface functional group is used.

Hybrid negative plate for lead-acid storage battery and lead-acid storage battery

The present invention generally relates to electrodes, electrical storage devices comprising the electrodes, and methods for producing the electrodes and electrical storage devices. The electrodes comprise a current collector, an electrically conductive mat, and a first and second electroactive material, the first electroactive material having a higher energy density than the second electroactive material, and the second electroactive material having a higher rate capability than the first electroactive material. The electrically conductive mat provides a structural and conductive support for at least one of the high-rate and high-energy electroactive materials. The electrodes can be provided in various configurations and be used in high-rate high-energy electrical storage devices to provide improved cycle life.

High performance energy storage devices

A method and apparatus for fast charging of batteries such as lead acid batteries is provided. A repeatedly pulsed current is applied to the battery to enable a determined resistance free maximum pulsed voltage to be reached where the determined resistance free maximum pulsed voltage is below that at which unacceptable gassing will occur. The determined resistance free maximum pulsed voltage is above that of a known average resistance free pulsed voltage for the battery type. When the determined maximum pulsed voltage is reached the pulsed current is continued to be applied to maintain the resistance free maximum pulsed voltage at approximately the determined resistance free maximum pulsed voltage by at least one of: (I) reducing the amplitude of the pulsed charging current, (II) increasing the OFF-time of pulses of the pulsed charging current, (III) decreasing the ON-time of pulses of the pulsed charging current, (IV) a combination of any two or more of (I), (II) or (III). In addition, the present invention may employ a combination of stages to charge the battery. Alternatively or in combination, the system may use a repeatedly pulsed charging current or a repeatedly pulsed charge voltage to control and adjust the charging of the battery.
