A telephone access () includes a signaling channel (). A substitute channel () or substitute channels () can be added to the signaling channel and used when the signaling channel is down. It is shown that this makes the telephone access more suitable for a separate signaling channel access or hybrid access configuration.

Communication method using one access

To solve the problems of sending signaling signals () between exchanges () which are interconnected by links () which have no facility for sending signaling signals conforming to the ISDN standard, the necessary signaling channel is simulated on a supplementary channel. In this case, the signaling data () formatted in accordance with the ISDN standard is converted into data formatted in accordance with said other channel on transmission and restored to its original format on reception. It is shown that this approach can overcome the hybrid nature of the links between two exchanges conforming to the ISDN standard. The exchanges include software conforming to the ISDN standard for which the link between exchanges becomes transparent.

The invention concerns a method of routing between a source node and a destination node in a network having nodes connected by links, compression being used on at least one of said links, the method comprising at least two routing calculation steps for a given number of compressions, i.e. in a plane P(). A routing calculation step for a given number of compressions uses information obtained during a routing calculation step for a number of compressions less than said given number. In this way a cost function can be minimized whilst assuring that in the route obtained the total number of compressions remains less than a maximum value. The route can be calculated for a given number of compressions using the Dijkstra algorithm and verifying the number of compressions when adding a node to the route. In this case, on reaching a link for which the given number of compressions is exceeded, the distance to the source node is saved for a subsequent calculation step.

Routing in a private network with compression

An interchange unit for a private telecommunications network executing partly in real time and partly in mixed mode, which interchange unit includes a half-link which has an interface using a protocol used by the interchange unit for connecting real time applications to the outside and an application-oriented interface to at least one mixed mode application.
