A transducer having an external contact surface includes a writer and a contact member. The writer has a portion extendable relative to an adjacent portion of the external contact surface. The contact member surrounds at least a portion of the extendable writer portion and is spaced from the extendable writer portion. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the contact member is approximately equal to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the extendable writer portion.

Methods of manufacturing a transducer

A slider having a slider body is provided. An electrical connection is coupled to the slider body. A first actuator is coupled to the electrical connection and adapted to displace a first portion of the slider body. Additionally, a second actuator is coupled to the electrical connection and adapted to displace a second portion of the slider body.

Method and apparatus for active control of spacing between a head and a storage medium

A magnetic device includes a write element having a write element tip and a conductive coil for carrying a current to induce a first field from the write element. A conductor proximate the write element tip carries the current to generate a second field that augments the first field. A driver provides the current to the conductive coil and the conductor, and a circuit phase shifts the current through the conductor relative to the current through the conductive coil.

A transducing device includes a writer having a pole tip region and a heater circuit. The heater circuit has a heating portion and a heater current return path. The heating portion has at least two branches positioned with respect to the writer so that current flowing through the at least two branches heat the writer. The heater current return path is electrically connected to the at least two branches of the heating portion near the pole tip region and includes an electrically conductive portion of the writer.

To reduce thermal pole-tip protrusion and recession, a magnetic head includes a multi-material basecoat. The magnetic head has an air bearing surface and a back surface opposite the air bearing surface. The magnetic head includes a substrate and the basecoat positioned upon the substrate. The basecoat has a first portion and a second portion wherein a Young's modulus of the first portion is less than a Young's modulus of the second portion. A data transducer is positioned upon the basecoat adjacent the air bearing surface.

A magnetic head having an air bearing surface is used to reduce thermal pole tip protrusion and recession. The magnetic head includes a substrate and a data transducer positioned upon the substrate adjacent the air bearing surface. The data transducer is comprised of a plurality of metallic layers. A compensation structure is positioned adjacent to at least one of the plurality of metallic layers, is exposed at the air bearing surface or recessed at the ABS and extends substantially perpendicular from the air bearing surface. The compensation structure is formed of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion less than a coefficient of thermal expansion of a material forming the substrate.

Magnetic transducers with reduced thermal pole-tip protrusion/recession

A reader formed in a data transducer includes a first shield, a read gap, a second shield, a maanetic compensation layer, and a non-magnetic spacer layer. The first shield is formed of a multilayer comprised of a layer of a first material. The second shield is spaced apart from the first shield by the read gap. The magnetic compensation layer is formed in the first shield and has a coefficient of thermal expansion of less than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the first material. The non-magnetic spacer layer separates the first material layer and the compensation layer of the first shield.

A head for a disc drive and a method of making the head. The head includes a substrate with a trailing side and a first air bearing surface that generates lift. A magnetic transducer is deposited along the trailing side and has a pole tip that is spaced apart from a disc by a pole-to-disc spacing. The head also includes a deposit along the trailing side. The deposit includes a second air bearing surface that changes position relative to the first air bearing surface as temperature increases.

The invention further offers a magnetic recording head that includes a substrate, a read sensor, and at least one shield, positioned adjacent the read sensor, with a thickness of from about 0.05 &#x3bc;m to about 0.5 &#x3bc;m.

Magnetic shields for reduced variations of head-media spacing

A head with a heating element and control regime therefor is disclosed. In embodiments described, the control regime or controller energizes the heater or heating element to provide intermittent heating between read or write operations to optimize transducer temperature and operating characteristics or parameters of a data storage device. In particular, in one embodiment described, the controller provides a low amplitude signal or current to provide low grade thermal heating. In another embodiment, the controller provides a high amplitude signal or current to preheat the transducer portion for write operations.

A transducing head formed upon a slider has an air bearing surface, a top magnetic pole, a shared magnetic pole, a write via, and a shared pole extension. The write via is positioned opposite the air bearing surface and extends between the top magnetic pole and the shared magnetic pole. The shared pole extension is positioned adjacent the air bearing surface and extends from the shared magnetic pole toward the top magnetic pole. The shared pole extension is separated from the top magnetic pole by a write gap. The shared pole extension is formed of a multilayer having a layer of a first material having a high magnetic moment and a layer a second material having a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially similar to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the slider material.
