An odor sorbing packaging material is prepared by applying to at least one surface of a flexible substrate an odor absorbing coating containing an effective concentration of activated carbon. The packaging material may be converted into packages, bags, pouches, liner members, wrappers or the like for packaging products and other materials that generate objectionable odors.

The preparation of packaging material having good moisture barrier properties from a C1S paperboard substrate in a single pass on a printing press is improved by preheating the substrate before application of the moisture barrier coating to the uncoated surface of the substrate. Preheating the substrate improves coating holdout, reduces pinholes and permits the application of a thin film of coating to achieve the desired result.

A coupon bearing lid component for a container is prepared from a sheet of paperboard, said paperboard having an outer surface with a finished coating for printing graphics and an inner surface on which coupon indicia is printed, the improvement wherein the inner surface of the lid has bonded thereto a polymeric film to cover the printed coupon indicia.

Packaging material for food products capable of producing fiber tearing seals when adhered together is prepared from a C1S substrate by applying a base coat to the uncoated surface of the substrate before applying a sealable, moisture barrier, food contact coating over the base coat. Precoating the substrate improves coating holdout, reduces pinholes and enhances the bond between the barrier coating and the substrate to achieve the fiber tearing seals.

An atmospheric environmental monitoring method utilizes a corrosion test element prepared from a transparent substrate having two opposed surfaces. A corrodable film is applied to one surface of the substrate in the form of a thin wedge of metal and a security coating is applied to the opposite surface of the substrate. The surface of the corrodable film adjacent to the transparent substrate is reflective to radiation when viewed through the substrate. The security layer is designed to reflect radiation in at least the visible region of the spectrum and yet be transparent to radiation in other parts of the spectrum.

Method for measuring atmospheric corrosion

A portable, environmental monitoring apparatus comprising a self-contained and internally powered data acquisition and recording device for continuously monitoring the environmental conditions in an enclosed space, preferably a computer control room. The apparatus includes sensors which measure pressure, temperature, relative humidity and the corrosive nature of the environment. The signals generated by the sensors and the atmospheric corrosion indicators are stored in a memory module included in the circuitry of the recording device. The memory module interfaces with an IBM-type PC for off loading the data and storing it on a floppy disc.
