An elastomeric material for providing electrical stress control comprises 5 to 40 volume percent low structured carbon black, 0.5 to 10 volume percent of high structured carbon black, up to about 30 volume percent of high permittivity inorganic fillers, and a remainder of polymeric carrier material and functional additives.

The present disclosure describes a device installation system. The system includes a device having a wireless communication tag that stores device identification information and torque information for installing the device via a threaded fastener. The system further includes a tool for applying torque to the threaded fastener to install the device. The tool includes a wireless communication tag reader, a temperature sensor, and at least one processor in communication with the wireless communication tag reader and the temperature sensor. The processor is configured to obtain the device identification information and the torque information from the tag via the tag reader; obtain ambient temperature information in a vicinity of the device via the temperature sensor; and determine an amount of torque required to apply to the threaded fastener to install the device using the obtained device identification information, torque information, and ambient temperature information. Related tools and methods are also described herein.

A method of remotely monitoring a status of a surge arrester disconnector includes providing a long-range wireless mesh communication system including a plurality of disconnectors organized in a plurality of clusters. Each cluster includes a plurality of disconnectors that are physically located within a same cluster area. At least one of the disconnectors in each cluster is coupled to a communication device of a predetermined communication range. The method includes transmitting, from a first cluster, a status signal indicative of a status of a first disconnector in the first cluster to a second cluster located within the predetermined communication range, and consecutively transmitting the status signal from the second cluster to a third cluster within the predetermined communication range, until reaching an end cluster. The method includes transmitting, from the end cluster, the status signal to a monitoring station, and monitoring the status of the first disconnector at the monitoring station based on a result of transmission of the status signal.

A method for preparing a polymer insulated cable including a semiconductive layer surrounding a polymeric insulation layer includes: cutting the semiconductive layer by grinding a circumferential dividing groove in the semiconductive layer using a rotating grinding surface, wherein the dividing groove defines first and second semiconductive sections of the semiconductive layer on opposed sides of the dividing groove; and thereafter removing the second semiconductive section from the polymeric insulation layer while retaining the first semiconductive section on the polymeric insulation layer.

A method for forming a cover assembly on an electrical power transmission cable includes: mounting a tubular cover member around the cable such that a portion of the cover member defines a cavity surrounding the cable; providing a flowable electrical stress grading material in the cavity; and applying a vacuum to the cavity to evacuate air from the cavity and compact the electrical stress grading material in the cavity.

A cable connector system includes an electrical cable (having a primary conductor and an insulation layer), a connector, a flow block member and a flowable sealant. The primary conductor of the cable extends into a conductor bore of the connector through a passage in the flow block member and is mechanically and electrically coupled to the connector. The flow block member is thereby mounted on the primary conductor and interposed between a terminal end of the insulation layer and an end face of the connector. The sealant surrounds the flow block member and adjacent portions of the insulation layer and the connector. The flow block member inhibits flow of the sealant into the conductor bore through the entry opening.
