A fuel cell or an electrolyser includes at least one electrode and at least one polymer electrolyte membrane. The electrode includes a catalyst system comprising a carrier metal oxide and a catalyst material. The catalyst material is formed by an electrically conductive metal phosphate in the form of a metaphosphate of the general chemical formula Me(PO), where Me=metal, z=valency of the metal Me, and n is within the range of 1 to 10.

An electrode unit (), in particular for a redox flow cell (), including at least one metallic substrate () and a coating () which is applied to the substrate (), wherein the coating () includes at least one protective layer () which is formed from titanium-niobium nitride (TiNbN) and/or titanium-niobium carbide (TiNbC). Layers for a bipolar plates are disclosed, as well as bipolar plates including the layers and fuel cells and/or electrolyzers including the bipolar plates. The layer may include a homogeneous or heterogeneous solid metallic solution or compound which either contains a first chemical element from the group of the noble metals in the form of iridium; or contains a first chemical element from the group of the noble metals in the form of iridium and a second chemical element from the group of the noble metals in the form of ruthenium. The layer may also include at least one further nonmetallic chemical element from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron, fluorine, and hydrogen.

Layer and layer system, as well as bipolar plate, fuel cell and electrolyser

A coating for a bipolar plate of a fuel cell or an electrolyzer contains a homogeneous or heterogeneous solid metal solution. The coating contains at least 15% Iridium and up to 84% Ruthenium with a total combined concentration of Iridium and Ruthenium of at least 99% (atomic). The coating also contains at least one of Nitrogen, Carbon, and Flourine. The coating may contain traces of Oxygen or Hydrogen. The coating may be used as part of a layer system that includes one or more undercoat layers and the coating as a covering layer.

Coating and layer system, and bipolar plate, fuel cell and electrolyser

A layer system includes at least one bonding layer and a plurality of functional layers arranged on the at least one bonding layer. Each functional layer has a first nanolayer of a first metal nitride with a first metal constituent, and a metallic second nanolayer. Each functional layer has a layer thickness d in a range of 1 to 100 nm.
