A device for monitoring a difference between the speeds of rotation of two rotating members featuring a differential gear assembly having two driven gears and at least one follower gear intermeshed and disposed within a rotatable housing is disclosed. The follower gear is rotatably connected to the housing to permit the housing to rotate at a speed proportional to a difference in speed between the two driven gears, the driven gears being connectable, respectively, to two different rotating members whose speeds are to be compared. A rotary fluid valve is disclosed which responds to the rotation of the rotatable housing to generate fluid output signals indicative of a difference in speed between the two rotating members. A system for automatically controlling the application of brakes to a wheeled vehicle traveling in either a forward or reverse direction which employs the monitoring device and the fluid valve to generate a fluid signal to correct a wheel skid or spin condition is also disclosed.

Fluid operated modulating valve

A fluid operated system for controlling a brake applicable to a vehicle wheel having a flywheel, driven by an unpowered vehicle wheel, connected to the vehicle brake pedal and adapted to disconnect the flywheel from the unpowered wheel to rotate independent thereof when the brake pedal is operated. Upon vehicle deceleration, the flywheel slides forward in the direction of vehicle movement due to inertia and slidably presses against a brake pad which decelerates the flywheel at a rate proportional to vehicle deceleration. A fluid operated valve having a housing containing spaced fluid inlet, storage and outlet chambers which open onto a concave base of the housing is employed to sense the rotational speed of the flywheel. A collar, connected to the flywheel so as to rotate in unison therewith, slidably engages the concave base and contains a slot which alternately connects the inlet and storage chambers and thereafter, the storage and outlet chambers together to generate a fluid output signal in the outlet chamber which is a function of the rotational speed of the flywheel. A wheel speed senser is used to sense the rotational speed of a vehicle wheel to which the brake is applied. A fluid valve, connected to the flywheel speed senser and the wheel speed sensor, generates a brake controlling response in accordance with a difference between the speeds of the wheel and vehicle and is operatively connected to the brake to limit the difference. Additional features include a manual override assembly which insures normal brake operation upon failure of the fluid operated system, and a pendulum arrangement associated with the flywheel to eliminate errors in vehicle speed sensing caused by gravity when the vehicle travels on steep inclines.

Automatic skid and spin control system for vehicle brakes and method

A hanger conveying system which routes hangers from a main screw conveyor onto a conveyor branch where they are transported through a processing station and thence returned to the screw conveyor at a point downstream from that where they were initially removed. Included in the conveyor branch is an endless conveyor of hinged links each having a plurality of hanger hook receiving slots or apertures. Also provided is a downwardly inclined input slick rail which picks off hangers from the main screw conveyor, and a cooperating peripherally notched disc which is spaced in close proximity to a curved section of the input slick rail located at the lower extremity thereof. The disc captures, in its notches, hanger hooks which have been picked off the main screw conveyor and are stacked at the bottom of the inclined input slick rail, and individually feeds the captured hangers in spaced relation to an output slick rail which is upwardly inclined. Associated with the output slick rail are chain-driven pins which move in synchronism with the notched disc along a path parallel to the output slick rail. The chain-driven pins positively advance the spaced hangers up the output slick rail, maintaining their spacing, eventually depositing them in the hanger-receiving slots of the endless conveyor links. The hangers, once on the endless conveyor, are transported through a processing station. At the output end of the processing station, a slick rail and cooperating notched disc and set of chain-driven pins positively feed hangers, which have been picked off the endless conveyor by the slick rail, to the main screw conveyor where they are deposited for transport thereby.

Hanger conveying system

A laundry machine and method for washing clothes having both a wash and extraction operation. There is included in the machine a rotatable drum for tumbling the clothes and liquid introduction means are provided for introducing liquid into the drum at the average rate of 0.5 to 3 gallons per minute during the wash operation. Means are also provided for producing a vacuum or negative pressure to withdraw the liquid from the drum during the wash operation at a rate sufficient to prevent a bath type washing action, then at the end of the wash operation stop the introduction of liquid into the drum and continue the negative pressure to withdraw the liquid during the extraction operation.

Laundry machine and method of washing clothes

An improved pick off device adapted to transfer open mouth hook type work supports (e.g., hangers) from an extended length screw conveyor onto a branch support member (e.g., a slide rod), the support member branching off from the screw conveyor at an angle relative thereto. In preferred form, the improved device includes a helix concentrically fixed in place to the screw conveyor, the major diameter of the helix being substantially greater than the major diameter of the screw conveyor's threaded rod. A pick off finger is positioned generally longitudinally of the screw conveyor, and is positioned between the helix and the conveyor's threaded rod. The pick off finger is pivotally connected at one end to the branch support member, that pivotal connection permitting the finger's free tip to move between a pick off position where same is closely adjacent the surface of the conveyor's threaded rod and a pass-through position where same is elevated above that surface. When the pick off finger is in the pick-off position, work supports being conveyed along the screw conveyor are driven by the helix in a positive manner onto the pick off finger, and then onto the branch support member, thereby positively moving the work supports from the screw conveyor onto the support member. When the pick off finger is in the pass-through position, the work supports simply pass through the helix section of the screw conveyor without engaging the pick off fingers, thereby permitting the work supports to continue past the branch support member while remaining on the screw conveyor.

Pick off device

The apparatus includes an elongated buck having an upper convex surface which supports the seam with the edges thereof outboard, and a portable iron having a concave bottom surface and a pointed nose which cooperates with the convex buck to simultaneously open and press the seam sandwiched therebetween as the iron moves in a forward direction thereover. The bottom edge of the iron is recessed on either side of the nose to permit the opened edges of the seam forward of the nose to flow smoothly beneath the iron as the iron advances thereover, preventing bunching of the seam forward of the iron as it advances. A jet of steam directed downwardly and forwardly is emitted from the nose of the iron to moisten the opened seamed edges and thereby enhance the permanency of the overbusting operation. In one form of the invention, the outboard end or nose of the buck, which is inserted into the pant leg when dressing it on the buck, is provided with a smoothly contoured V-shaped notch which guides the seam which is to be overbusted into proper position atop the buck, expediting the dressing operation. Additionally, the buck is provided along its length on its underside surface with downwardly directed compressed air jets which apply a radially outwardly and downwardly directed force against the lower longitudinal one-half section of the pant leg from the interior thereof, in turn pulling the upper seam of a pant leg dressed atop the buck tightly thereagainst to maintain it in position during the overbusting operation.
