A process and composition is disclosed for a hydrolytically stable lubricant base oil exhibiting superior antiwear properties, dispersancy, thermal stability and oxidative stability. The base oil comprises a mixture of mono, di and tri alkylated anisole having the following structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.a, R.sup.b and R.sup.c are hydrogen with at least one of R.sup.a, R.sup.b and R.sup.c comprises a secondary alkyl radical containing 8 to 24 carbon atoms.

Alkylated aromatic compounds, either alone or in a mixture with an alkylating agent, are disproportionated, alkylated or transalkylated in the presence of a ZSM-22 zeolite. The products of the reactions contain the amounts of the para-isomer which are in excess of the equilibrium amounts of such isomer. Alternatively, 1,2-disubstituted, 1,3-disubstituted and/or 1,4-disubstituted aromatic compounds are contacted with the ZSM-22 zeolite under cracking conditions to selectively crack the 1,4-disubstituted isomer.

Hydrocarbon conversion with ZSM-22 zeolite

A process for the selective dimerization of cycloolefins having from 5 to about 12 carbon atoms is provided. The process comprises contacting of the olefin in the liquid phase with ZSM-12 at temperatures of 75.degree. to 400.degree. C.
