A cutting element for use in a drilling bit and/or a milling bit having a cutter body made of a substrate having an upper surface, and a superabrasive layer overlying the upper surface of the substrate. The cutting element further includes a sleeve extending around a portion of a side surface of the superabrasive layer and a side surface of the substrate, wherein the sleeve exerts a radially compressive force on the superabrasive layer.

A method of producing a drill bit, such as for drilling a well into an earth formation, includes forming a bit body having a plurality of blades. Each of the plurality of blades includes a forward facing face with respect to a direction of rotation of the bit. The forward facing face includes individual cutter pockets at least partially recessed into the forward facing face. The method also includes securing a cutting element at least partially within each of the individual cutter pockets. Each cutting element has an abrasion resistance. Each of the plurality of blades is formed of a blade material having an abrasion resistance that is less than the abrasion resistance of the cutting element.

A drilling assembly for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes an expandable reamer and an expandable stabilizer. The expandable reamer and the expandable stabilizer each have a tubular body with a longitudinal axis and a drilling fluid flow path extending therethrough. A plurality of blades is carried by the reamer and a plurality of bearing pads is carried by the stabilizer. The blades and bearing pads are outwardly movable from a retracted position to an extended position with respect to the longitudinal axes of the reamer and stabilizer, respectively. The reamer and stabilizer each include an actuation device for moving the blades and bearing pads, respectively, from the retracted position to the extended position.

Drilling assemblies including expandable reamers and expandable stabilizers, and related methods

Methods of forming inserts for earth-boring tools include providing a material in a pattern adjacent a strip, arranging a plurality of superabrasive particles proximate the pattern, and securing at least some of the plurality of superabrasive particles to the strip. The material is configured to attract or secure the plurality of superabrasive particles. Some methods may include imparting like charges to each of a plurality of superabrasive particles, placing the plurality of superabrasive particles over a strip, and securing the superabrasive particles to the strip. In some methods, a first plurality of superabrasive particles may be placed in an array between a first strip and a second strip. A second plurality of superabrasive particles may be placed in an array between the second strip and a third strip. Methods of forming earth-boring rotary drill bits include forming an insert and securing the insert to a body of the bit.

A method of optimizing drill bit design and an optimized drill bit for drilling a well into an earth formation comprising a bit body; a number of blades spaced around the bit body, each blade having a curved outer edge and a forward face; a first row of cutter pockets recessed into the face along the outer edge of each blade; a second group of cutter pockets recessed into the face of each blade offset from the first row; and a plurality of cutting elements, each cutting element being brazed into a different one of the cutter pockets.

The wellbore is drilled or reamed using at least one cutting structure on the casing shoe as the at least one section of casing is advanced into the wellbore.

A cutting element for an earth boring bit, may include a PDC layer having a flat on a periphery thereof, the flat terminating longitudinally at an edge spaced from a cutting face of the PDC layer. A chamfer adjacent to the cutting face desirably has a length that exceeds its depth. A cutting element may additionally include a chamfer along the entire circumference, multiple step-wise, radially adjacent chamfers, and multiple circumferentially spaced portions of the uppermost radius of the PDC layer of the cutting element that each includes a chamfer with an associated flat. Additionally, a cutting element may include a flat terminating at a radial edge with the cutting face of a PDC layer.

A drilling tool including at least two cutting elements (e.g., redundant or upon a selected profile region) sized, positioned, and configured thereon so as to contact or encounter a change in at least one drilling characteristic of a subterranean formation along an anticipated drilling path prior to other cutting elements thereon encountering same is disclosed. Methods of designing a drilling tool are also disclosed including placing such cutting elements upon the cutting element profile in relation to a predicted boundary surface along an anticipated drilling path. Methods of operating a drilling tool so as to initially contact a boundary surface between two differing regions of a subterranean formation drilled with at least two cutting elements is disclosed. The cutting elements configured on drilling tools and methods of the present invention may be designed for limiting lateral force or generating a lateral force having a desired direction during drilling associated therewith.
