A golf club head () having a body () with a front wall () with an opening () and a face component () is disclosed herein. The face component () has a striking plateand a return portion. The return portion () creates a sandwich structure () with edges (and) of the body (). The body () is preferably composed of a light weight non-metal material. The present invention provides a hollow golf club head comprising a metal striking insert and a composite body. The metal striking insert ( ) is molding within the front face wall ( ) of the club head body and is securely attached at the outside perimeter of the insert to the composite body and at the front corners of the composite body through the use of a sandwiched structure ( & ). The sandwich structure formed at the boundaries of the striking metal insert efficiently dissipates the impact energy affected when a golf ball is hit. The structure also dampens efficiently the vibrations of the shock affected when the ball is hit on the metal striking insert. The present invention of positioning the insert inside the face wall, not extending outside the face wall, uses less metal material which is heavier than the composite material and makes a larger club head at the same total weight of the club head. A larger golf club head that gives a higher moment of inertia is highly sought-after for a hollow club head construction.

Plastic foam materials having a high degree of structural integrity, cell network uniformity and small cell size are obtained from (meth)acrylic acid and (meth)acrylonitrile by incorporating acrylamide as a comonomer additive within certain ranges of concentration. Incorporation of the latter together with conventional additives normally used in preparing foams from the principal monomers helps to avoid preliminary precipitation during the polymerization process, and the gradients in the polymer microstructure which frequently result and cause internal stresses and weaknesses in the ultimate product.

Compositions and process for producing foam plastics

Open-cell structures are filled with polyimide foam formed in place by the use of a foam precursor in powdered form comprised of a combination of (a) the reaction product of an excess of organic polyisocyanate and a member selected from the group consisting of furfuryl alcohol and condensation products thereof, and (b) an organic polycarboxylic compound containing two carboxylic anhydride groups. The precursor is prepared by combining the species under conditions which favor the reaction of the furfuryl alcohol with the polyisocyanate, but not the polyimide-forming reaction. The polyimide-forming reaction itself is then performed by adding preselected amounts of the powdered precursor, depending on the desired ultimate density of the foam, to each cell of the open-cell structure, then heating to initiate the polyimide reaction, and permitting the carbon dioxide generated by the reaction to escape while confining the resulting foam to the cells.
