A skin external composition containing 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-&#x3b2;-D-glucose (hereinafter referred to as 'PGG') and its use to improve moisture balance of skin are disclosed. The skin external composition, due to containing PGG, stimulates the formation of filaggrin in keratinocytes, increases loricrin and involucrin expression, thereby stimulating the formation of a normal keratin layer, and as a result, can strengthen the skin barrier function to provide an excellent skin moisturization improving effect. Thus, the composition is effective in improving moisture balance of skin. A method for moisturizing the skin using the composition is also disclosed.
