A deinterlacing method based on an edge-directional interpolation in a conversion of video signals of an interlaced scanning format into those of a progressive scanning format, in which the unit of interpolation is extended from the unit of one pixel to the unit of one pixel group. An intermediate frame video is formed from an original interlaced field video. Mismatch values associated Keith edge directions are compared, thereby determining four edge directions exhibiting mismatch values less than those of other edge directions. An interpolation pixel value is calculated, using the intermediate video frame, indices of the four edge directions, and indices of the edge directions. A determination is made based on similarities of the four edge directions, differences among the less mismatch values associated with the four edge directions, and differences of the less mismatch values from mismatch values associated with the remaining edge directions.

Deinterlacing method for video signals based on edge-directional interpolation

Disclosed is a motion-compensated interpolation (MCI)-based deinterlacing method for converting video signals of an interlaced scanning format into those of a progressive scanning format. The deinterlacing method involves a motion vector estimation step, a video signal deinterlacing step, a deinterlacing side-effect check step, and a deinterlaced result select step. The motion vector estimation step includes the steps of estimating a motion vector by the unit of a &frac12; pixel, using the previous frame, the current field, and the future field, and estimating a motion vector by the unit of a &frac14; pixel, using the previous frame and the future field. Based oh a motion vector estimated at the motion vector estimation step, the video signal is deinterlaced. The deinterlacing side-effect check is achieved by conducting a check for determining whether or not the estimated motion vector has a temporal consistency, a check for determining whether or not the estimated motion vector has a critical velocity, and a check for determining whether or not the estimated motion vector has a backward matching accuracy. When the result of the side-effect check is satisfactory, the result of the deinterlacing is accepted. On the other hand, when the result of the side-effect check is unsatisfactory, the result of a deinterlacing conducted based on a method other than the MIC is accepted.

Deinterlacing method for video signals based on motion-compensated interpolation

Disclosed are a deinterlacing method and apparatus based on a motion-compensated interpolation (MCI) and an edge-directional interpolation (EDI). The disclosed deinterlacing method and apparatus are characterized in that the deinterlacing of a video is conducted using both the MCI and EDI schemes in a single deinterlacing system. An input video signal of an interlaced scan format passes through an MCI block, an EDI block, and a line averaging interpolation (LAI) block, respectively. Respective resultant video signals outputted from the MCI and EDI blocks then pass through MCI and EDI side-effect checking blocks. Based on the checking results outputted from the side-effect checking blocks, a decision and combination block selects a desired one of the MCI, EDI, LAI pixel indices. The decision and combination block selects an output from the MCI block when MCI is superior whereas it selects an output from the EDI block when EDI is superior. Where neither MCI nor EDI is satisfactory, an output from the LAI block is selected. When both the MCI and EDI are satisfactory, an average of the MCI and EDI values is derived and outputted as a deinterlaced pixel index.

Deinterlacing method and apparatus based on motion-compensated interpolation and edge-directional interpolation

A motion prediction apparatus and method that is capable of preventing the redundancy of calculation occurring during a motion prediction. In the apparatus, a first motion estimator predicts a single-pixel motion in a top-to-top field path and in a bottom-to-bottom field path with respect to an input image by retrieving a previous image. A frame vector determining circuit determines a frame motion vector on a basis of a motion vector outputted from the first motion estimator. A scaler scales each motion vector outputted from the first motion estimator to determine a field motion vector in a different path. A second motion estimator predicts a motion in a half pixel unit by retrieving a decoded image on a basis of each single-pixel motion vector outputted from the first motion estimator, the frame vector determining circuit and the scaler. The apparatus can reduce a calculation amount required for a motion prediction in a single pixel unit to &frac14; compared with the prior art.

Motion prediction apparatus and method

A motion prediction method and apparatus that can reduce an input/output band width during a single-pixel estimation and a half-pixel estimation employing a hierarchical algorithm. In the method and apparatus, a motion in a single pixel unit is repeatedly retrieved in accordance with a position information detected dependently at a plurality of layers with respect to an input image, and the input image is coded and decoded. Then, a motion in a single and half pixel unit for a decoded reconstructed image is estimated at a certain layer in the plurality of layers. The method and apparatus is capable of reducing a calculation amount required for the motion prediction in a single pixel unit as well as reducing an input/output band width during the single-pixel and half-pixel estimation employing the hierarchical algorithm.
