A system and method for controlling call admission in a wireless communications network recursively estimates reverse link load levels as a function of changes in base station receive power and/or the number of mobiles served in the cell/sector. In one implementation, a call admission controller utilizes multiple load level estimating methods, whereby a first method estimates load as a function of changes in base station receive power and changes in the number of served mobiles. The call admission controller uses a second method to recursively update load level estimates as proportionally changing with number of users. The call admission controller may utilize a third estimate method as an accuracy check based on a changes in base station receive power measurements. The call admission controller outputs a call blocking command when load level estimates exceed a threshold to avoid cell/sector overload conditions and network instability.

System and method for reverse link overload control

A method for detecting and calculating the contribution by external jammer signals to the total power received by a reverse link of a communication system. The total received power for a reverse link is measured. Calculations of load estimates based on power rise due to background noise and total E /N are performed. The contribution of external jammer signals to the total power received is calculated from the load estimates. The ability to calculate the power level of external jammer signals for a certain reverse link allows a service provider to more efficiently use the capacity of the reverse link. An average of the calculated external jammer power level can be calculated over a period of time defined by the service provider of the communication system.

Method of detecting and calculating external jammer signal power in communication systems

A method for preventing overload conditions in a communication system. The communication system performs a call load analysis and admits a subscriber requesting admission (or responding to a page) to the system based on the result of the call load analysis. The call load analysis is based on the signal to noise power ratios of all subscribers already admitted to the communication system. External jammer signals that interfere with subscriber signals thus reducing the coverage of the communication system do not affect the call load analysis. The jammer signals therefore, do not hinder an efficient use of the capacity of the communication system. A threshold value is established and such threshold value is compared to an average call load value calculated from a plurality of instantaneous call load values. When the calculated average call load value is substantially equal to or above the established threshold, no subscribers are admitted to the communication system; subscribers are admitted when the calculated average call load value is below the established threshold. Individual subscribers whose contributions to the average call load value are deemed significant (tending to cause or actually causing overload conditions) are identified and removed from the system.

Method for preventing overload conditions in communication systems

A processor monitors the real time forward link power utilization in a base station, and a controller regulates the real time forward link power utilization in the base station. The processor and controller operate in a feedback configuration to maintain call quality and prevent damage to the base station. The processor determines real time forward link power utilization on a per frame basis by taking samples at a per chip rate within each frame. The forward link power is then obtained by taking the mean of the samples.

CDMA forward link power overload control in a base station

A method and apparatus for reasonably discriminating between an appropriately behaved wireless terminal and an inappropriately behaved wireless terminal is disclosed. In particular, some embodiments of the present invention are capable of reasonably discriminating between an appropriately behaved wireless terminal and an inappropriately behaved wireless terminal even though consecutive frames have heterogeneous rates (i.e., full-rate frames, half-rate frames, quarter-rate frames, etc.). An illustrative embodiment of the present invention receives a frame from a wireless terminal and determines how many 'gated-on' groups are in the frame. The illustrative embodiment next determines how many power-down commands should be issued or have been issued to the wireless terminal in response to the received frame. Next, the illustrative embodiment compares the number of power-down commands for the frame to the number of gated-on groups for the frame. When the number of power-down commands equals or exceeds the number of gated-on groups for the frame, then the frame is counted as a violator, which suggests that the wireless terminal is misbehaved.
