A component on a composite bridge plug used for plugging a wellbore includes a first member including a wound composite material, and a second member including a molded fiber phenolic composite material. The wound composite material of the first member makes up more than half of a volume of the component. The first member is a convolute-wound core having a cylindrical shape. The second member forms an outer shell that is molded over an outer surface of the first member. The component is a cone of the composite bridge plug.

Wound composite core for molded components

A technique for manufacturing a millable bridge plug for plugging of a wellbore during, for example, a fracturing operation. A bridge plug is constructed with an obstructed internal passage. The obstructed internal passage is formed by winding a composite material about a wrapping mandrel having at least one cylindrical part and a solid part coupled thereto. The cylindrical part is removed after a curing process leaving a mandrel with a plugged internal passageway upon which a seal member combined with a plurality of slips for engaging a surrounding wall, e.g. a surrounding wellbore wall, may be coupled.

A technique facilitates plugging of a wellbore during, for example, a fracturing operation. A frac plug is constructed with an unobstructed internal passage and comprises a seal member combined with a plurality of slips for engaging a surrounding wall, e.g. a surrounding wellbore wall. Additionally, the frac plug comprises a lower sub having raised edges arranged to catch a ball during a flow back stage without blocking flow along the unobstructed internal passage.

A technique facilitates deployment and operation of actuatable plugs, e.g. frac plugs or bridge plugs. According to one embodiment, the plug comprises a flexible element slidably mounted on a portion of a cone, e.g. an upper cone. The upper cone comprises a tapered surface which works in cooperation with upper slips movably secured to the upper cone. The bridge plug also comprises a lower cone which comprises a lower tapered surface which works in cooperation with lower slips movably secured to the lower cone. Depending on the application, the plug may be constructed with each of these features combined into an overall assembly or with a portion of these features to facilitate plug operation in a specific environment and operation.

Actuatable plug system for use with a tubing string

An angled segmented backup ring includes a plurality of slots extending radially inward from an outer surface and extending axially parallel to one another and non-parallel to a longitudinal axis and a plurality of the segments defined by the plurality of slots. The adjacent segments may overlap one another in the axial direction.
