Methods and systems directed to the separation of a heavy hydrogen isotope, e.g., tritium, from an aqueous stream are described. The methods and systems incorporate a separation media that includes a proton conducting ceramic that at low temperatures preferentially adsorbs heavy hydrogen isotopes and at high temperature preferentially adsorbs lighter heavy hydrogen isotopes. The methods can be temperature controlled to sequentially purify a contaminated stream and regenerate the separation media. The separation media can be free of traditional hydrogen isotope exchange catalyst materials.

Nanostructured ceramic membranes for hydrogen isotope separation

A method for fabricating a protonic ceramic energy device includes: coating an electrolyte layer on an anode layer; and densifying the electrolyte layer by a rapid laser reactive sintering (RLRS) process on the electrolyte layer and/or the anode layer to form a half-cell comprising a dense electrolyte and a porous anode.

Integrated additive manufacturing and laser processing systems and methods for ceramic, glass, and silicon carbide applications

Methods and systems for the separation of hydrogen isotopes from one another are described. Methods include utilization of a hydrogen isotope selective separation membrane that includes a hydrogen isotope selective layer (e.g., graphene) and a hydrogen ion conductive supporting layer. An electronic driving force encourages passage of isotopes selectively across the membrane at an elevated separation temperature to enrich the product in a selected hydrogen isotope.

Hydrogen isotope separation methods and systems

A hydrogen permeation membrane is provided that can include a carbon-based material (C) and a ceramic material (BZCYT) mixed together. The carbon-based material can include graphene, graphite, carbon nanotubes, or a combination thereof. The ceramic material can have the formula BaZrCeYTO, where 0&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.5, 0&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.5, 0&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.5, (x+y+z)&#x3e;0; 0&#x2264;&#x3b4;&#x2264;0.5, and T is Yb, Sc, Ti, Nb, Ta, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, In, or a combination thereof. In addition, the BZYCT can be present in the C-BZCYT mixture in an amount ranging from about 40% by volume to about 80% by volume. Further, a method of forming such a membrane is also provided. A method is also provided for extracting hydrogen from a feed stream.

Graphene-ceramic composite membrane for hydrogen separation membranes

A hydrogen permeation membrane is provided that can include a metal and a ceramic material mixed together. The metal can be Ni, Zr, Nb, Ta, Y, Pd, Fe, Cr, Co, V, or combinations thereof, and the ceramic material can have the formula: BaZrYTOwhere 0&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.5, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.5, (x+y)&#x3e;0; 0&#x2266;&#x3b4;&#x2266;0.5, and T is Sc, Ti, Nb, Ta, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, In, Sn, or combinations thereof. A method of forming such a membrane is also provided. A method is also provided for extracting hydrogen from a feed stream.

Chemically stable ceramic-metal composite membrane for hydrogen separation

Disclosed are solid fuel cells, including solid oxide fuel cells and PEM fuel cells that include nanocrystalline cerium oxide materials as a component of the fuel cells. A solid oxide fuel cell can include nanocrystalline cerium oxide as a cathode component and microcrystalline cerium oxide as an electrolyte component, which can prevent mechanical failure and interdiffusion common in other fuel cells. A solid oxide fuel cell can also include nanocrystalline cerium oxide in the anode. A PEM fuel cell can include cerium oxide as a catalyst support in the cathode and optionally also in the anode.

Nanocrystalline cerium oxide materials for solid fuel cell systems

Perovskite materials of the general formula SrCeOand BaCeOare provided having improved conductivity while maintaining an original ratio of chemical constituents, by altering the microstructure of the material. A process of making Pervoskite materials is also provided in which wet chemical techniques are used to fabricate nanocrystalline ceramic materials which have improved grain size and allow lower temperature densification than is obtainable with conventional solid-state reaction processing.
