A method is performed at a computing device coupled with a display. The method includes displaying a graphical user interface that includes a data visualization in a first state, including a plurality of visual marks. Each of the plurality of visual marks is displayed in a corresponding first position. The method includes receiving user input in the graphical user interface to specify an action that triggers an animated transition of the data visualization from the first state to a second state. The data visualization in the second state includes one or more of the plurality of visual marks in corresponding second positions. The method includes, in response to the user input, triggering the animated transition of the data visualization from the first to the second state. The animated transition is configured by three or more visual parameters, including: an animation mode, an animation speed, and an animation emphasis.

User interfaces for facilitating performance analysis for processing include a first window and a second window. The first window identifies events that have been captured during processing of a set of commands by a processing unit, such as during the drawing of a video frame by a graphics processing unit. The second window includes information regarding the processing of the set of commands at different chronological points during processing, such as showing how the frame appears at different chronological points while being drawn.

Facilitating performance analysis for processing includes capturing a state of a processing unit and capturing a plurality of commands submitted to the processing unit for processing. Both the captured state and the captured plurality of commands are also saved. The saved state and commands can be used for analysis, such as by processing only a subset of the commands or processing a modified set of the commands.

A plurality of actions are applied to a directed graph, where the directed graph has a plurality of nodes. A node in the directed graph is traversed to, and an specific method for each of the plurality of actions is performed on the traversed-node. Only a single traversal of the directed graph need be performed to apply all of the actions to the directed graph. The plurality of the actions are in the form of a chain. Each action has an action object pointer, and the actions include a base action at a tail end of the chain and at least one chain action at a head end of the chain. The action object pointer of each chain action points to an immediately adjacent action toward the tail end of the chain, and the action object pointer of the base action points to the chain action at the head end of the chain.

A virtual frame buffer controller in a computer's display system manages accesses to a display image stored in discrete compressed and uncompressed blocks distributed in physical memory. The controller maps conventional linear pixel addresses of a virtual frame buffer to pixel locations within blocks stored at arbitrary places in physical memory. The virtual frame buffer controller maintains a data structure, called a pointer list, to keep track of the physical memory location and compression state of each block of pixels in the virtual frame buffer. The virtual frame buffer controller initiates a decompression process to decompress a block when a pixel request maps to a pixel in a compressed block. The block remains decompressed until physical memory needs to be reclaimed to free up memory. A software driver for the virtual frame buffer controller performs memory management functions, including adding to a free memory list when the virtual frame buffer requires more memory and reclaiming memory previously allocated to a block of pixels whose state has changed from a compressed to an uncompressed state, or from a decompressed back to a compressed state.
