Systems and methods are provided for generating document-specific histories for multi-document print jobs. One system is a workflow server with an interface and a controller. The interface receives a print job that defines multiple documents, and the controller directs devices of a print shop in accordance with a print workflow. The controller identifies properties of each of the documents to track while the print job is being processed in the workflow, receives progress information from the devices, and analyzes the progress information to detect a triggering event indicating that a document in the workflow has transitioned to a new state at an activity. When recording criteria direct the controller to update the history, the controller adds an entry to a history file while the document is in the workflow. The entry indicates values of the properties of the document, as well as a current workflow activity for the document.

Document-specific workflow histories for multi-document print jobs

Systems and methods are provided for utilizing a workflow activity to suppress individual documents of a print job prior to printing. One embodiment is a workflow server that includes an interface and controller. The interface receives a print job that defines documents which each indicate an intended recipient for delivery. The controller directs devices of a print shop by following a print workflow that comprises an ordered set of activities to perform upon the documents. The controller also detects that the print job has reached a scheduled activity of the workflow for pulling documents from the print job based on criteria, identifies documents of the print job that match the criteria indicated by the activity, and removes the identified documents from the print data for the print job before the print job is printed, preventing printing of the identified documents.

Workflow activities for suppression of documents inside of a print job

Methods and systems for improved workflow management for a related group of jobs. A group of related jobs are received from a job source and are processed independently and in accordance with an associated job type for each job. The jobs may be processed and reprocessed independent of all other jobs in the group and may be processed substantially concurrently or in parallel. A group workflow manager assures synchronization of the jobs to generate the expected order in the output. The synchronization is defined by synchronization actions processed as part of the workflow processing. The synchronization actions may be defined in the job type of each job, or in a group job type, or defined by user interaction.

Processing a group of jobs substantially independently while synchronizing and maintaining the original order of the jobs at appropriate points in a workflow

Methods, systems, and apparatus for improved ease and flexibility in defining attribute values for jobs in a workflow processing system. The job attributes are presented to a user grouped or organized by their relationship to various elements of the workflow model used to process the job type. Further, default values for job attributes may be flexibly defined based on elements of the workflow model that utilize the job attribute and/or based on dynamic computations of functions involving the various job attributes and other parameters.

Flexible attribute management in workflow processing systems

Methods, systems, and apparatus for flexible, configurable job workflow processing. Features and aspects hereof provide for generating workflow models from configurable templates. The workflow models may include one or more phases, each comprising one or more processes, each process comprising one or more steps. The Phases, processes, and steps may all be defined by configuring parameters of corresponding templates. Information defining the workflow models and all job information for jobs to be executed are entries in an integrated database such that creation and update of workflow model information and job information is performed as simple database queries and updates.

Customer-configurable print workflow system

Methods, systems, and apparatus for migrating a database of a workflow processing system from a current version to a new version by serializing the data into serialized objects and then deserializing the objects into the new version of the database. The current version of the database may include elements of data associated with base features and extension features of the workflow processing system. The new version of the database is initially generated to include only base features associated with a new version of the programmed instructions of the system. Deserializing the serialized objects into the new version of the database is effective to merge the object types of the information in the current version of the database into the object type of the new version of the database.

Migration of database using serialized objects

A method is provided for arranging a plurality of orders for printed articles in order to reduce wasted space when printing the orders in multiple column's. A plurality of orders for at least one printed article are obtained, and the orders are sorted according to the number of printed articles in each order to produce a sorted arrangement of the orders. For each successive order in the sorted arrangement of orders, the order is placed in a column which currently has a lowest number of total printed articles. In a preferred embodiment, the first K orders in the sorted arrangement of orders are placed in columns 1 to K, where K is the total number of columns. Also provided is a system for producing custom printed articles.

Method and apparatus for arranging a plurality of orders for printed articles

Provided is a method, system, program and data structures for managing structured documents. Each structured document has at least one element in common and each element is capable of having one defined data object. At least one table is generated based on a schema of elements in the managed structured documents. Further, at least one table is designed to include entries for each element instance in the managed structured documents and at least one object for one element instance. For each element instance in the managed structured documents, one entry is added to at least one table including information on an element identifier for the element instance, the data object for the element instance, and a document identifier for the structured document including the element instance. The at least one table provides an association of the element instance, the at least one data object for the element instance, and the document identifier of the structured document including the element instance.

Method, system, program, and data structures for managing structured documents in a database

A method is provided for generating a variable data file to be used to generate custom printed articles. A template including a plurality of tokens is read, and a data structure including a plurality of printed article ID's is generated. A record in a database is identified using a first printed article ID, and data is extracted from a field of the record which is specified by a first token in the plurality of tokens. The data is outputted to the variable data file. In a preferred embodiment, an index is incremented to point to a second printed article ID in the data structure in response to reading a second token in the template. Also provided is a system for producing custom printed articles.

Method and apparatus for generating a variable data file to be used to generate custom printed articles

A method is provided for tracking printed articles. Input indicating that a first carrier is being mounted to take up printed articles is read, and an ID of the first carrier is read in. A record associating the printed articles with the first carrier is made. In a preferred embodiment, the ID of the first carrier is read in by reading a bar code of the first carrier. Also provided is a system for producing custom printed articles.

Method and system using carrier identification information for tracking printed articles

A method is provided for reserving a portion of web to be used as a leader portion. A measurement of the length of a web is obtained, and a plurality of print jobs are received. At least one print job length is determined, and an operation involving the at least one print job length and the web length is performed. In a preferred embodiment, the operation is performed by subtracting a sum of the lengths of the plurality of print jobs from the web length to obtain a difference. Also provided is a system for producing custom printed articles.
