The present invention provides a method and system for the restoration of an optical mesh network subsequent to the simultaneous failing of a large number of network connections due to a transmission failure. The system and method increase the restoration speed of a large number of failed network connections through connection aggregation. The system and method provide that connection aggregation is the logical bundling of a plurality of network connections across a network span. By enabling the bundling of these individual network connections transported over a particular span or spans, a network operator manages the bundle as if it were one network connection. The method and system provide that other network links support these bundled connections when the network segment that a managed bundle is traversing fails.

Method and system for span-based connection aggregation

A bi-directional line switched mesh includes at least one bi-directional line switched ring (BLSR) sharing a common section with a partial bi-directional line switched ring (PBLSR). The partial bi-directional line switched ring has no working traffic along the common section, but may utilize the protection bandwidth associated with the common section of the BLSR in the event of a span failure of the PBLSR. Both electrical and optical PBLSR networks are also disclosed including methods of operating the asymmetrical ring nodes having unconfigured working ports (spans).

Bidirectional line switched partial rings, mesh networks, and methods of operation

To take advantage of 56K modem technology, a data signal must only traverse one digital to analog (D/A) conversion and one analog to digital (A/D) conversion on the return path to a subscriber. However, current data transmission for subscribers served by a Universal DLC system requires a D/A conversion at a voice switch of a public switched telephone network (PSTN), an A/D conversion at the central office terminal of a PSTN and a D/A conversion at a remote data terminal of a DLC system. This adds a D/A and an A/D conversion which causes 56K modem technology to fail. The present invention provides a telephone call routing apparatus installed between subscribers served by a Universal type digital loop carrier system, a central office terminal of a PSTN and a data network interface. The present invention avoids an additional digital to analog conversion performed at the PSTN voice switch and an additional analog to digital conversion performed at the PSTN central office terminal, thereby enabling 56K modem data transmission.
