Various methods and systems are provided for operating an internal combustion engine, the engine having a plurality of cylinders including one or more donor cylinders and one or more non-donor cylinders. In one example, a method includes, during an exhaust gas recirculation cooler heating mode, operating at least one of the donor cylinders at a cylinder load sufficient to increase an exhaust temperature for regenerating an exhaust gas recirculation cooler, and operating at least one of the non-donor cylinders in a low- or no-fuel mode.

Methods and systems for operating an engine

In one example, a method comprises, while the engine is operating in a low-load mode or an idle mode, successively operating distinct subsets of said cylinders at a cylinder load sufficient to increase an exhaust temperature for burning unburned fuel and/or oil deposited in the cylinders or engine exhaust system. Herein, each successively operated subset comprises at least one but fewer than all of the plurality of cylinders, and the cylinders that are not currently being operated in a subset are operated in a low- or no-fuel mode.

Method and system for reducing unburned fuel and oil from exhaust manifolds

A method and system for using exhaust temperature anomalies to detect fugitive fueling of a reciprocating internal combustion engine compares an exhaust temperature attribute with a predetermined threshold value for such attribute, which is a function of either the combustion of fugitive fuel within the engine, or an indicator of an operating condition leading to fugitive fueling. If the value of the attribute exceeds the threshold value, remedial action will be taken to avoid engine damage resulting from fugitive fueling.

A method for detecting and responding to fugitive fueling of an internal combustion engine uses monitoring of the variability of at least one fuel-linked engine operating parameter to determine that fugitive fueling is occurring. Once fugitive fueling is detected, mitigation will be implemented so as to shut the engine down without consequential damage.

A diesel engine () wherein both the operating speed of the engine (RPM) and the timing of the fuel injection into the engine (AA) are cooperatively controlled to be responsive to both the temperature and the pressure of the air () used for combustion. A controller () receives a temperature signal (), an air pressure signal (), and a power demand signal () and executes control logic to produce a fuel injection control signal () and an engine speed control signal () for controlling a fuel injection system (). A control strategy based on engine inlet air temperature and pressure or manifold air density may be useful for variable speed and power applications. For applications with discreet speed and power points, such as a locomotive, a speed and timing control strategy based on ambient temperature and pressure is useful for maximizing power during high altitude and/or high ambient/inlet air temperature operation.

Diesel engine control

An apparatus and method for mounting electrical devices in a housing at an angle relative to the ground is provided. The apparatus comprises a housing having a top, bottom, and sides, each of which may be open, closed or ventilated. One or more electrical devices are located in the housing and are oriented at an angle relative to the horizontal ground. The electrical devices may be silicon controlled rectifiers that serve as a power bridge between an exciter and a power generator. A method for mounting electrical devices in a housing at an angle relative to the horizontal ground is also provided.

Series-parallel fans system

An apparatus and method for providing a supply of air to cool electrical devices is provided. The apparatus comprises a two fan housings, each containing a number of fans arranged to blow air in a parallel fashion. The exhaust of one housing is connected to the intake of the other housing by a balancing plenum. The apparatus provides a sufficient supply of cooling air when one or more of the fans is inoperable. The device being cooled may be the power bridge of an exciter for a power generation system. A method for providing a supply of air to electrical devices is also provided.
