Glass articles with coatings are disclosed herein. According to embodiments, a glass article may include a glass body comprising glass and having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, wherein the first surface is an exterior surface of the glass body. A coating disposed on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body. The coated glass article may have an effective throughput rate greater than or equal to 1.10×R, wherein Ris the effective throughput rate of an uncoated glass article in units of parts per minute (ppm).

Glass articles with low-friction coatings

A method for improving the efficiency of a pharmaceutical filling line by running the filling line at an increased throughput rate is disclosed. The method involves using glass vials that have been strengthened and coated to reduce the coefficient of friction of the outer surface of the vials with a pharmaceutical filling line set at a rate greater than or equal to 600 vials per minute and running in an efficiency of at least 70%. In other embodiments of the invention, the pharmaceutical filling line may also be provided with a polymer chemical coating at points of contact with the glass vials, thereby further reducing the friction between the vials and the points of contact and the effects of impact of the vials with contact points of the pharmaceutical filling line.

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to coated glass articles which reduce glass particle formation caused by glass to glass contact in pharmaceutical glass filling lines.

Pharmaceutical glass coating for achieving particle reduction

According to one embodiment, a glass article may include a glass body having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The first surface of the glass body may be etched to a depth less than or equal to about 25% of the maximum initial flaw depth Ai of a flaw population present in the first surface. The flaw population of the first surface is etched to selectively remove material adjacent to each flaw of the flaw population along the maximum initial flaw depth Ai. When the glass article is under uniaxial compressive loading, at least a portion of the first surface is in tension and a uniaxial compressive strength of the glass article is greater than or equal to 90% of a uniaxial compressive strength of a flaw-free glass article.

Glass articles and methods for improving the reliability of glass articles

The first surface and the second surface each have a radius of curvature. The first surface of the glass body comprises a flaw population extending from the first surface into a thickness of the glass body with a maximum initial flaw depth Ai. The first surface of the glass body may be etched to a depth less than or equal to about 25% of the maximum initial flaw depth Ai of the flaw population present in the first surface. When the glass article is under uniaxial compressive loading, at least a portion of the first surface is in tension and a uniaxial compressive strength of the glass article is greater than or equal to 90% of a uniaxial compressive strength of a flaw-free glass article.

A method of forming a vent in a glass substrate includes forming a defect in the glass substrate on a scribe line. A beam spot of a laser may be directed onto the defect and advanced along the scribe line. A cooling jet may be directed onto the defect such that the surface of the glass substrate is cooled from a maximum temperature. Thereafter, the cooling spot may be advanced along the scribe line with the beam spot to form the vent in the glass substrate.
